State of paid content

Ok, I get that this is a niche fetish so I can't be expecting much...but...

paid content seems really bad lately. am I just snobby and expecting too much? I remember some old free content that seems to have more heart in it. The dialog was better, the characters seemed more believable, the reactions seemed to fit and the actions taken were more human.

Now it just seems like the art is better, but everything else is worse. Others opinions? or am I just blinded by nostalgia goggles, and thinking the first growth stuff I seen was the best? Or maybe I'm just outgrowing growth in general i dont konw.
