Human-animal Hybrids?

It turns out the UK has authorized the creation of human-animal embryos. Right now, it's mainly just applicable for small amount of human DNA to merged with various animals for research and disease-prevention purposes, but suddenly, the idea of catgirls walking down the street almost doesn't seem so far fetched. Now, while it's doubtful they will ever allow such a thing as catgirls to actually be created, it is still an interesting bit of news in principle. Thoughts?

Whether or not they're allowed is one thing. Being able to do it another thing entirely. I don't think this is going to go very far.

Allowing scientists to grow embryos for research purposes is good, but I don't think they intend to let them grow to term - and I doubt that it would lead to positive results if they did.

hum they play a dangerous game in allowing such experimentation.
And the arguments are always the same. ParkinSON and Halzeimer....but there is others uncurable disease accros the world.

This really isn't all that far fetched. What's more disgusting is the end part where the Vatican calls it a "monstrous act directed against human dignity". Yes, research to save lives is against human dignity.

I don't see it going near what people in the community might want it to go. However, I do see more opportunities in science fiction coming from this. And what I mean is non-community media focusing on the topic. I can imagine a Crichton-type writing something up with this. Hell, the film Splice is already on the way dealing with the topic.

Somebody told me the Nazi's did experiments like this during the war... Never verified it myself. Said all the resulting offspring died right away...

I'm pretty sure the Nazi's tried createing Human Ape hybrids via artificial insemination, Getting the test subjects drunk in a specialy built bar failed to produce any results J/K :P. The experiments proved Humans and Apes can't produce offspring "naturaly".

seems like a descent attempt to get arround objections to doing research on human stem cells. Use something that is not 100% Human. (it still would be mostly human). This is not an attempt to create hybrid animals, so I don't see how this is dangerous experimentation. As for there being other incurable diseases, most diseases are curable, and a lot of those that are not are the type of degenerative diseases that would benifit from stem cell research. Even the effects (though not the virus) of HIV/AIDS could be combated with stem cells.
