Hard to believe it wasn't legal in New Zealand until now. I'm astounded to think it wasn't the case at home for most of my life.

Kiwis have had the civil union option for gay people for a while now, right?

I remember when Texas passed a bill a technical reading of which would have been a form of marriage equality. Law is still on the books, and I wish it was being enforced the way it is written.

Bring the law to light, Sephie. They can't very well ignore their own laws once it's common knowledge. Get that section of the law and make fliers. Bring it to the attention of everyone. If they refuse to abide by it, then you have all freedom ot go over their heads and get them all in trouble for it.

A technical reading of this one law bans all marriage.

Technically that would mean marriage equality

We have since 2003 , but it has never had the same level of legal recognition or protection under the law.
