Personally, my eyes usually glaze over stickies, unless it's a specific thread that I've previously had interest in. I don't know why. Maybe it's some sort of cognitive schema that says, "That's not new content. Time to move along."

I tend to think stickies are important information I don't need to read. Fresh, exciting topics don't get stickied because genuine interest keeps them near the top of the forum. A new thread with two pages of replies says "something's happening over there." A new thread with glue all over it says "one person believes this is very important."

As I thought. Important announcements will never be read, even if they still apply, if they're stickied. Hmmmm.....
On another forum, people get PMs whenever something important goes up. The whole board does. Would that be a better way?

That's a great way to annoy people. Some would say "there's no such thing as bad publicity." You'd certainly get more attention with a stunt like that. Personally, I go out of my way to avoid things when they're shoved in my face, but not everyone's like that.
