Hi there i know its not realy something belonging to here but i just wanted to know wat you think about it
this morning ive looking trough the newspaper and there was some awesome and somehow creepy story on the backpage. In Genf in the switzerland they wanna bouild an particelaccelerator to make experiments about the Big Bang. (to explain, particels getting speeded up in nearly lightspeed and getting crushed against other partikels to simulate the birth of the univers) So there is the chance that a little black hole apears and if this hole is instable it will begin to suck up ever matter on earth. Some high professors warned that this could realy happen and if it does the earth will be swallowed hole and getting pressed together to the mass of an centimeter and that in an time of about 50 month, but against all warnings they wanna do the experiment in this year. I know thats all about real difficult pysicall stuff and i think the most dont mind it, but i readed much about these theorys in such magazins and i think it could realy happen. Have a bad feeling about that, what do you think about this story? Or what you think about such people and there silly and shameless hopes to playing god? |

Yes there's a chance, a very very small chance. A next to nothin chance. The naysayers are the same folks who wanted to stop the nuclear program because there was a slight chance the atmosphere would be ignited. Science marches on!

Ugh. Stop reminding me that the end is coming sooner than planned please? It's bad enough hearing one end of everything possibility after another end of everything possibility. It makes my stomach turn.

Re: Black hole swallows earth
The following is a strange argument, with a strange conclusion, so I'll just jump into it:
1) All life on Earth expands and adapts to fill any available nitch. This is a central part of what life is; constant reproduction and evolution is why life forms continue to thrive while any non living structure decays. 2) If humans learned how to escape their solar system, the same rules of expansion would apply across the galaxy. It might take less then a million years for humans to colonize every star in the Milky Way. 3) But the universe is 20 billion years old! If humans could spread across the galaxy that fast, why hasn't some alien race already done this? With so many suns existing for so long, is it realistic to think that our ordinary planet has produced the first intelligent life form? 4) So where are the aliens? Something must be stopping all alien civilizations from expanding into space. Maybe there is a secret barrier to space travel. Maybe all intelligence ultimately destroys itself. Or maybe they start playing with physics that has a small chance of creating a black hole. |

Re: Black hole swallows earth
Yeah but think of whats will going on when it happens. because of the hole is growing so slowly the people will running mad if they know they all will die no chance to do anithing to it just wait for it. Mass-panic, mass-suicide, wars becaus people wanna reach places where the hole will reach at last, rich ones and politicans will build spaceships in hope to survive somehow in space and leaving us here to die,
so i dont realy wanna know what i would do if it happens.http://1.2.3.13/bmi/www.process-prod...s/confused.gif ![]() |

Re: Black hole swallows earth
might have more to do with it not being possible to travel faster than the speed of light, makes interstellar colonization much longer and harder.
Or hey, maybe.. we're first? Some race has to be first, why not us?

Re: Black hole swallows earth
i don't see why exactly everyone wants to stop this. what other purpose is there in life besides discovering the rules that govern reality. that's about the only meaningful pursuit left for us westerners, and even that's pretty shallow and frankly, impossible. people do so cling to their lives as though there were absolutely nothing else. i understand this is a very important tenet of survival in nature, but when all of our hardships have been overcome, and we have little to do but cause a steady flow of dopamine in our brains, why do we still cling to this limited and hollow existence. everything that needs doing has been done. any new inventions will not be revolutionary, only more intricate or complex versions of old inventions.
you can see this in books, in movies, in tv. everything is a cliche, to the point that you can collect them and call them "tropes" we are pastr the curve in our exponential graph when it comes to population and number of inventions and just about everything else. i fear that though we may create more, nothing truly new will be created. long has the time passed when a human could think of an original thought, one that has never been thought of before. so why, why cling to this limited and ever more crowded existence? forget those petty wars, disagreements are no longer life or nation threatening (er, or the bigger nation). all we can do is sdquabble about how to squander our remaining resources instead of searching for more. why haven't we been to mars? why are we still willing to halt all space missions simply because one went wrong? humans as a species need to find new paths, new avenues of thought, or living. the way we are now, nearly everything will have been made or thought, books will become copies of other books, or two books combined, instead of new and interesting stories. i envision a future similar to south park's episode "simpsons did it" in which everything has already been done. already been played out. the same jokes told. only new for a new generation, but not truly new for the speices. we need to explore, either the other side of dea or the other side of the moon. evolution has already been retarded by compassion, no other destiny seems available for man. |

Re: Black hole swallows earth
heck, to continue on, David Brin already thought of this. check out his novel "Earth" for an accurate, if dramatic, idea of this.
no orginal ideas exist anymore... |

Re: Black hole swallows earth
The speed of light is factored into the colonization time. (it was Actually 5 million years.)
http://stuff.mit.edu/people/etekle/Articles/aliens.html Assuming a typical colony spacing of 10 light-years, a ship speed of 10 percent that of light, and a period of 400 years between the foundation of a colony and its sending out colonies of its own, the colonization wave front will expand at an average speed of 0.02 light-year a year. As the galaxy is 100,000 light-years across, it takes no more than about five million years to colonize it completely. Though a long time in human terms, this is only 0.05 percent of the age of the galaxy. Edit: Quote:

But then about point 4. Maybe they got one whiff of what we're like, and they want nothing to do with us. (like in a Red Dwarf conversation: "Ewwww, that planet's got humans! yuck!") Maybe we don't have the faster than light signal receiving "radios" so we can't hear them talking to us Maybe they have an agreement not to communicate with species that haven't developed faster than light travel, a common sci fi idea (like in Star Trek) Or, useful planets are so few and far between that contact between galatic races becomes almost impossible no matter how good the techonology, because it turns out the speed of light really is the limit, and it takes a galaxy's worth of energy to achieve it. But wait, there's more! Maybe species evolved enough become pure energy, or go to a different dimension. Someone's been watching too much Stargate. Oh wait it was me.
