TF Flash Game (Now with better hit detection!)

I've been lurking around this site for a while now and happened upon some great stuff. In particular, some games that have been posted here. For a long time, I was content with trying my hand at digital editing in photoshop, but the results were usually poor as my artistic ability is minimal at best. But seeing pixel art reminded me that I have some talent at that, so I worked on a project in Flash.

I've been a programmer for 12 years and coded a lot harder projects than this, but Flash is just a horrible piece of software to use. Since it's the only thing for it, I'm forced to use it, even if the results aren't as good as I would have hoped for.

So, the game. I saw Dontino's work and thought it could only be better if I used a bigger, non-Naruto sprite. I still think some of his ideas for that game were classic. I had a horrible time coming up with ideas for this game.

So yeah, it's a platformer, just like his. I'm a little more cruel with my game while at the same time not throwing death your way. Let's just say you won't be a fan of the last level in an area.

I've managed to do three areas thus far. I have done the pixel work on about twenty other animals, but they're scattered around the various zones so I didn't get to work on those. Also I ran out of ideas, as I said.

The basic gameplay is simple. Left and right move, up jumps. The numbers in the top right corner are Health and some arbitrary thing I assigned to how many times stage obstacles have been hit. Health usually goes down one bit at a time (though about 20 times a second) for things like mud, so if you end up in the muck and actually want to finish the level, you can as long as you have at least 1 HP left. The other number will increase as you collide with stage obstacles. This number varies per stage based on the difficulty of avoiding them. So far it ranges from 1-5.

If any time time you 'lose', a Retry button will appear. All progress you've made up to that point will be saved (unless you close the game), so you can easily replay any stage. I've included a bonus for those who manage to clear all three demo stages.

I work on this thing on a "do I feel like it today?" basis, which is why it took me about a month or two to throw it together. Work has stagnated, as I said before, because I've run out of ideas. If you have an idea for anything, don't hesitate to recommend it. Just naming animals wouldn't really be ideal though. I'd prefer if you had a suggestion for the animal, the process (though it's limited by what Flash (and I) can do), the post-TF idle, as I call it (what she does after it's done to prevent just standing there looking bored and give you incentive to watch it the entire way through), the trigger (what causes it), and the stage surroundings or the entire stage itself. Feel free to just post it here.

So far I've done the following sprites in-game (if you don't want to know until you play the game, then don't highlight the list): Cat, Dog, Mouse, Bunny Deer, Skunk, Fox, Raccoon, Chicken, Horse, Sheep, Pig, Donkey

And these sprites are done but not implemented: Penguin, Walrus, Dragon, Fairy, Unicorn, Giraffe, Tiger, Pikachu, Eevee + 7 evolutions, Mudkip, Piplup

And these sprites are on the list of "to-do": Polar Bear, Seal, Caribou, Griffin/Chimera, Pegasus / Unicorn, Lion, Zebra, Gazelle, Dolphin, Orca, Crocodile, Frog, Crane, Turkey, Flamingo, Duck, Toucan, Hawk, Bald Eagle, Owl, Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Snake, Panda, Vulpix, Torchic, Buneary, Mew, Meowth

The list of stages I'm still thinktanking are in the game.

Also, there are plenty of known bugs. Don't bother reporting the following, as it's Flash's fault and there's nothing I can do to fix it to the best of my knowledge.

Sometimes during an animation, the left edge of the left side of her will be affixed onto the right edge of the right side of her (see Farm stage 4)
You're allowed a mid-air jump if you're walking off of a platform. Since the code is "ground" for everything that's under her, they consider that the floor. Can't be fixed.
Some levels might lag like hell. A friend of mine beta-tested it and said it wasn't running well. I have a beast of a computer and running this is no problem for me. If it's really necessary, I'll put a quality button in. In the meantime, the right-click "Quality" should work if you experience heavy lag. I haven't been able to beta-test since removing a lot of things that I thought were bogging it down (1,000 leaves drawn at once might do that).
There's a small bug in Farm-2 with the gate system that works itself out. I can't figure out how to fix it and frankly I really don't care to try lest I make it worse.

Constructive criticism highly sought after.

tl;dr: play this flash game it's fun i think

0.0: released.
0.1: Revised 3-3 to be slightly easier
0.2: Revised 1-3 to be slightly easier, placed another reset button near 3-3's finish.
0.3: Fixed hit detection! (Thanks Tolka!) Made 1-3 even easier. Hopefully reduced some of the lag in some stages. Improved "look and feel" of some stages that I felt were lacking. Also added the first cheat!
0.4: Jungle stage added! Minor tweak to the jumping mechanics to prevent multi-jumping when jumping up through a platform. Stop continuation of "dodge" games upon failure to complete stage. Fixed being behind hay in Farm-2. Added walls to prevent "hop-up" on Woods-1 signs. Fixed invisible item in "dodge" games. Fixed scoreboard being behind platforms in House-3. Fixed carry-over jumping in House-3. Altered "reset" button mechanics (it follows you around now! You'll never be without it again!)
0.5: Randomizer for Woods-2 and Farm-3 works again. Implemented sideways sprites for creatures that don't make sense standing up. Made Jungle-3 slightly easier. Made Jungle-2 slightly easier. Added spot on bananas for Jungle-1 for those who have a hard time distinguishing the colors. Added another cheat. Will probably remove it if I ever make this a full game, but for now, I'll leave it in.

I am going to leave version 4 up for awhile just to compare download rates. Version 4 has ~400 views at this point. Either you're all viewing it 40 times each or a lot more people are having fun with my game than previously expected. I don't mind. I just wish some of those people would help me with ideas.

Now I'm going to leave both up for a while as some people might not prefer the edits made. Version 6 has been posted.

Re: TF Flash Game

Not bad for a first go. The collision's a little wonky, notably with side collisions, and some of the puzzles are unnecessarily unforgiving (Like the "city dump" one, which I always wind up at -2 right before escaping) but it's a good groundwork.

Re: TF Flash Game

Damn.. I have to say... just .. damn.. simple, yet fun, and amusing. ... very nice.

Edit: Beat it, and I like that little easter egg. Can I guess that it'd have something to do with "A strange new world?"

Well done! That was very enjoyable, and if you think that's crap I'd love to see what you'd call gold! Great contribution.

Re: TF Flash Game

Damm, this game is great but I have two question.

1) What are the tincans in Farm 2 for?
2) How do I pourposly do the big jump needed to get them (at least the three in the air)

I also saw a small bug in Farm 2, If you become a horse while standing near the donkey stable (the donkey stable is on the left site of you and you got the be as close as possible) the stable doors are opening to.

One final improvement I suggest is that purly animals like the cow, pig, horse or donkey are forced to stand on all four hooves after the transformation is complete. I?ve got a dog at home an shes able to walk on her hindlegs only so animals like those are perfectly fine like they are in the game but I?ve never saw a cow or sheep do something like that.

Well thats all but like I said in my first sentence, Damm this game is great.

I think the Sign is a solid platform, I double jumped off it.

Re: TF Flash Game

I tried that. I couldn't reach it, even when I jumped from the very edge of the fence.

And I just tried it again anyway, and fell right through the sign. If it is meant to be a platform, it's not a very well-designed one. Sorry, man, the TFs don't make up for the sloppy level design.
