PC concern

Pardon if this is the wrong place for it, but there is a problem I am having with my computer and it goes like this...

"H:\MAIN\cool stuff\New Folder\New Folder\New Bea\We__ll_Start_At_The_Top_by_SeriojaInc.jpg could not be saved, because a file already exists with the same name as the '_files' directory.

Try saving to a different location."

I can no longer save certain files to a certain folder on my computer, it works on subfolders of this one but not this one in specific. Also I say certain because it seems to be random in which files it chooses not to save in it...I recently did a bit of cleaning in this folder, but nothing that would cause this I should think...oh and there is no other file of that name in the folder I am trying to save it in so it seems a bit odd...

Re: PC concern

there they are the second one is a bit more long winded, the first is a condensed version...but the folder I'm having trouble with is on an external hard-drive. FAT32, 500 gigs, about half full, I'll get back to you with the error checking stuff.
Attached Files
File Type: txt system specs.txt (1.2 KB, 2 views)
File Type: txt system specs2.txt (38.4 KB, 2 views)

Re: PC concern

Count the characters. There's a maximum length starting from H: and ending with the extension. I believe it's either 128 or 256. You may be hitting it.

- edit -
"GOD" huh? About 86 characters, so the above statement isn't it. Nice of those report tools to specify the file system being used.

Hehe what can I say? My definition of god is very malleable. The system check did the trick, many thanks. I didn't know about that utility...eh live and learn.

Re: PC concern

alright scratch that, it stopped working again...wtf...maybe its because I've already had the files before or something?...but before I was given the option of saving over the previous files of the same name...I recently got rid of a few older folders and combined them into a master folder...but I have no idea how that would make a difference. Also all my folders are checked as read only, and everytime I shut it off, I click on properties again and it goes back up...wtf
also how do you non-write protect files?

Re: PC concern

The read-only "grey" box is annoying. Basically if you have a lot of files, it automatically uses the half-way graphic. There's blank, there's an X, and then there's just a square. The square means some are, some aren't.

Re: PC concern

I think I found a temporary fix, I just made a whole new folder for it, and transferred all the files there...seems to work fine, and I'm sort of a pragmatist, so I suppose I'll leave it at that unless there are any sorts of suggestions to prevent this from happening again. Thanks for the help, either way.
