Creating a process game: looking for artists

As some of you may be aware, I've opened a thread in the General section of these forums. In short: I want to create a 2D video game (Windows/DirectX) that revolves around process/transformation.

The thing is: while I am a programmer and can write the actual software, my skills at drawing are non-existent. To make a long story short: this project needs people who are willing to provide artwork for it. Blackshirtboy already kindly offered his help, but I would prefer the game to be a bit bigger than a simple Flash game, so we'd need at least a couple more artists before we can really get started.

Check out the other thread I linked above for more information. Also, I'd prefer if you don't reply to this thread but to the other one in order to keep things in one place. I mostly opened this thread for a bit of extra coverage as I suspect not everyone reads General.

Just out of professional curiosity, what API are you writing the game against, DirectX or XNA? Is your avatar a hint? I do a lot of .NET dev work myself but I tend to stick with WPF, Silverlight and ASP.NET.

Consider the avatar a hint. I come from a professional PHP and Java (Android app) background. I've got unprofessional experience with C, C++, Delphi/Object Pascal and some other languages that no one in their right mind still uses. I've only just started with C#, .NET and XNA but I'm already in love. Great set of tools.

would be nice if it would be also available on linux and mac (alot of artist are using mac as far as I know)
So java would be nice and .net could run on mono.

.NET could run on Mono, but I'm pretty sure XNA does not have a Linux equivalent. Though I'm pretty sure Wine has no trouble running the average DirectX 9 game, so I'll make sure it'll run on that.

To target Macs and Linux, it's probably worth checking out MonoGame. I've never used it myself (or used XNA) so YMMV.

I would strongly recommend using Unity over XNA. XNA isn't being supported by Microsoft anymore, and Unity can handle 2d just fine.

And, of course, Unity lets you use either C# or Java.

Cool, will keep that in mind. If it's not more trouble than it's worth I have no problem compiling it a few more times.

No offense to him and all of his hard work, but an interactive text adventure is quite different from a well animated platform/adventure game. I'm not sure what good talking to him will do.

Where did you find an actual statement that XNA will not be supported? As far as I know it could still go both ways: either XNA will be deprecated in favor of a new API, or we'll see XNA 5. As it stands now, XNA 4 has no real issues even in Windows 8. The only "problem" with XNA games is that you won't be able to sell them in Metro's marketplace, and to be frank I'm not interested in that anyway. As far as I'm concerned Metro is a failure before it has even come out. On desktops that is, for touch devices and even laptops with touch screens it's fine.

Same thing you would find with any game developer. Though the mediums you want to use are different you could swap ideas about transformation. How to put together a story, though he didn't start out with much of one it has slowly been added to and expanded upon.

Also you could talk about the difficulties that come up with doing such a project. The time commitments and just trying to make sure you got a good game.

Just saying that even though you want to do a graphical adventure, all graphical adventures start as a text adventure somewhere and grow.

Also you might want to go to http://www.tfgamessite.com/phpbb3/index.php . The people here have done both forms of usage and some in-between.

Overall I wish you luck and would be happy to bug test for you. :P

Re: Creating a process game: looking for artists

I should probably have mentioned that this is not the first time I'm making a game. The last time I made one is about 10 years ago, but I have some experience in how to make it work, both in team play and solo. As for story: I've got something in mind right now but I would like to keep that quiet for two reasons: first and foremost, the rest of the team needs to agree once the team is complete. Second, I don't want to spoil the story too much for the people who will be playing it.
