Subs vs. Dubs

I would have put this in F&BS, but I'm actually interested in having a semblance of a focused conversation.

Which is better? Is one better than the other? In the end, if both are available to you, does it really make that big of a difference?

Personally, I prefer dubs to subs, but I recognize the quality of the subs. I tend to prefer dubs is because they use my primary language. That makes it easier to follow them (and imitate them, in some cases), for the most part. Not to mention the fact that I like to multitask. If I'm watching a subbed anime, I have to watch the screen the entire time so that I don't miss anything, which limits my multitasking. Still, one of the other advantages of subs is that I can eat crunchy things without having to worry about not catching what someone said.

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

I perfer dubs in /most/ cases. I will watch horribly dubbed anime I like in subs, and I have no issue watching subs online when I'm looking for a new show to get into. I perfer dubs, because I dont speak Japanese ;p Even when I do finally get that under my belt, I have some favorite voice actors who's work I love hearing ^_^

Most anime now are faithfully translated and keep with the original in concept. I'm not talking about hte horribly fucked stuff like yu-gi-oh and all the 4kidz splicing. I'm talking about the anime like Fullmetal Alchemist.

Ah yeah, I almost forgot to mention the favorite voice actors part! But yeah, companies are getting much better at dubbing than they have been. Still, you've gotta admit that the Yu-Gi-Oh dub was pretty decent by the end of the series.

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

Depends on the anime I suppose. There are some that even though I have the option of watching the subs I don't because I grew up watching the dubbed version, and it just wouldn't seem right to change it after all that. Then there are some I started watching in subs but after hearing a clip or two dubbed I found it had some of my favorite English VAs so I watched the rest dubbed.

Examples would be anything that was on Cartoon Network's Toonami block or Adult Swim I will watch dubbed because that's what I grew up with. And even though I started watching Index subs I found I enjoyed the English VAs from earlier stuff like Soul Eater so I switched halfway through the series to watching the dubs. I think Funimation's got some decent English VAs. Good enough to get me through season 1 of Fairy Tail (everyone was good except Natsu, his every word was stupid and cliche.. but maybe he's written that way).

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

I myself prefer Dubs, though with the current state of digital editing bad dubs SHOULD be the thing of the past. Since you can digitally edit to make lip flap match the only reason for bad dubbing now is laziness. Since their is a strong market for uncensored anime that also should not be an issue. There is no reason localization shouldn't be nearly complete translation of the original show.

I do notice "Hardcore" Anime fans blast american VAs performances not matter how good they are.

Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist
Serah Ferron in FF13 and 13-2
Keiko Yukimura in Yu Yu Hakusho
Kid Trunks in DBZ
...she has amazing talent for voices

JYB:
Nero in Devil may Cry 4
Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach
Renton in Eureka 7

Blum:
....everything?
Spike from Cowboy BeBop
Tom from Toonami
everything... no seriously he's got hte guiness title for most credited voice work

Baker:
Snow from FF13 13-2
Kanji Tatsumi from PErsona 4 (game and anime)
Greed in FMA Brotherhood

Oh shit, I totally forgot Laura Bailey was Lust. Ya know JYB had a small role in FMA as well? Just one episode though, his character died in the only episode he was in. For me though I think his best role was Vash in Trigun. Steve Blum really is in every-friggin-thing, Wendy Lee used to be as well. I think Yuri Lowenthall is pretty much getting a role in everything these days as well. I almost never hear Crispin Freeman anymore, just sometimes.

I'm really wanting to see who does the dub voices for the new characters in the next season of Fairy Tail. I know the english version is way behind, but I'm hoping Laura Bailey gets on that show.

I have a friend with dyslexia who still insists on watching them. I'm not sure how he does that.

I'll go with either, honestly. Though, there are times where a full sentence practically flashes on the screen, and I can't read that fast.

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

I don't watch much anime, but I watch a decent amount of foreign films. I'm a bit torn on the issue, but the fact is that American voice acting tends to suck. Hearing the US dub is just not as good as hearing the original performance. It doesn't matter if it's shlock like Le Pacte des Loups or Night Watch or a classic like The Seven Samurai. The English dub is always awful. On the other hand, film is such a visual medium that it's a shame to spend the whole time reading instead of viewing.

I think I will go watch Le Pacte des Loups again now...

Re: Subs vs. Dubs

Always has been subs for me. When I was first watching anime series back in the early 90's (a lot of which was dubbed in the eighties or earlier) most of the dubbing was pretty horrific.

By the time I got to watch reasonably dubbed work, I'd grown used to the subtitles I almost don't notice anymore...(Likewise when watching Chinese cinema.)

Given the choice, I'll watch them subtitled every time. (This is not to say there are not some well done dubbed versions out there, because there are)
