Proposing. Which one sounds best?

As the title says, I'm going to pop the question on my upcoming vacation with my girl. I'm all for romantic gestures, but I'm having trouble deciding on a method. She's not the type to be easily embarrassed, so a big public thing is an option, such as in the main showroom of our cruise ship. On the other hand, part of our vacation is going to involve a 'champagne and sunset' harbor cruise on St Thomas, which sounds like a nice place for a more intimate proposal. There's also the option of doing it at a fancy dinner. What say you folks?

I would think that would depend on the individual you are proposing too. Make certain it is a night she enjoys. For example if she loved horseback riding take her horse back riding. If it were me the best thing would have been to take me to a botanical garden.

Never do the big gesture unless you can meet two conditions: you know she'll say yes, and you know she won't feel awkward about it. Seriously, people feel sorry for those guys who pop the question in front of a ton of people and get turned down, but they put their girlfriend on the spot in front of a ton of people! How would you have reacted to having to make such a sudden, life-changing decision in front of more than 100 people? Seriously, don't so that.

Well, I already know she'll say yes, and a crowd wouldn't bother her.

As for giving it meaning, this cruise is right before her birthday, and it's her first vacation in a decade, as well as our first as a couple. It's already got meaning out the wazoo, lol.

It's also not where you ask it as much as how you ask it. Make it unique, get other people in on it. Make it something that is completely unexpected and memorable.

Proposing is about you and your partner. You don't need a big show piece, you don't need to involve a lot of people. If you over-think it, you'll screw it up.

Keep it simple. I mean, don't throw a ring box at her and say "here" but it just has to be you guys, romantic and simple. A big show of things doesn't always make it better. The fact that you're proposing to your partner is memorable enough.

And if you propose, do it AFTER dinner.
