Anywho, Giygas is certainly one of the last character's I'd expect to see TG/BE'd! I didn't even know it had a body at all! ^_^;

I hate to break it to you, Long John Silver, but you're totally wrong. Mother 3's main antagonist is Porky. Giygas is totally destroyed in Mother 2.

There's also a totally freaking awesome fan-translation of awesomeness being made by the totally awesome Tomato that's actually fairly close to completion. Actually, the "translation" you're talking about is probably just the menu patch they made early on in the project.

They're not giving any dates or percentages or anything, since the hacking they're having to do is really crazy, especially with real life always intervening. They have a to-do list that you can check out, though.

It's an excellent quality translation though, and reading what all they've had to do because of how the game's programmed is pretty interesting stuff.

I hear tell that they plan to be done within a few months, and the official website at http://mother3.fobby.net/ updates a couple times a week.

Even though the updates are almost always seemingly minor things like "Hey, check out this neat trick we did that changes the battle-text for different pronouns!" it certainly beats no updates at all, and it's cool to see how much work goes into such an undertaking.

Even better, they're giving it away for free.

See, it's a loophole, they aren't distributing the actual ROM of Mother 3, just a patch that will turn all the dialog English, which you'll have to apply to your own Mother 3 ROM, which isn't legal to distribute, but isn't tricky to find.

Since there's virtually no chance of Nintendo of America translating the game themselves, something about a troupe of drag queens in the game, they leave the fans little choice but piracy.

Yeah, it's a free fan-translation. One of the most ambitious ones, too, perhaps, but then again EarthBound fans are famous for being the most dedicated fans for literally any game ever, even after being screwed up the butt time and time again.

Selling games you don?t have the legal right to is very very very taboo in the fan translation community. Hacking ROM?s in the first place is a legal grey area (and would certainly be a legal black area if it ever had a legal precedent). None of us want a lawsuit breathing down our necks, we do it for the love of the game!
