Play FREE football?

I saw that in an ad while watching the Young Turks (liberal, but equal opportunity, commentators). It said play FREE football, then led to some website that was totally not free that was roaming with Trojans and malware (which I had steps in place to prevent infection).

My automatic thought? If you want to play "free football", call some friends, and go fucking play OUTSIDE!! How fucking hard is it for some people to just step out their door and connect with people?! Do you really need to be cooped up 24/7 and connect to people all alone, inside your house? That's not connecting with people. That's another way to communicate without actually seeing or interacting with anybody else. "Oh boy! I got another letter in my email from somebody I've never even seen or heard, yet they want to be a part of my life!" It's not the same at all!

Anyway, what are some things you've seen that have sent you guys off on tangents like this?

That's my exact philosophy on any sport converted to video game form. It's completely asinine.

This comment is asinine.

As for the subject, well, you tell me where I can easily get 21 other people and a ton of pads and a nice field...

The last time I checked, you don't need to be funded to play outdoor football. All my friends needed was the ball, at least more than 10 people, and the local park or an open high school football field. It isn't rocket science.

Well, there's a difference between two-hand touch football and full on tackle football. If you like blocking to be part of the game, that is.

You can tackle whether with or without pads. It's all about getting out there and playing, not sitting in your room, doing nothing. It's akin to watching TV.

People = By socialising. Unless you're really isolated, like Kapol, in which case you can do other sports which require less people.

Pads = You pussy. I've been thinking of real football, not American. However, I assume that American football is enough like rugby that you don't need pads for that either. So you've scraped your shin? Boo hoo. So a couple of your ribs are broken? Oh well, keep playing. (And yes, I have broken ribs playing rugby before.

Field = Um... a park, maybe? That's what they're there for. Or even some waste ground would do.

Never call it football. Call it "association football", or for American football, "Gridiron Football"

This confusion really needs to be settled once and for all, and "American Football" is a terrible name for it that never needs to be spoken of again.

As for pads, have you ever worn a full set of gridiron football pads? You feel fricken invincible. You hit harder, throw yourself at everything without fear. If you look at Rugby tackles and NFL tackles, it's obvious one tends to be a lot more timid then the other. If you charge into a tackle face first without a facemask, you're likely to break every major part of your face at once.

Everything else, though. Eh, that needs planning, especially if there's no nearby field. And getting a ton of people in one place. Easier to put in a videogame when it's pitch black outside, and it's a heck of a lot easier to have a decent teammate too. But Association Football's pick up and play aspect is one of the great things about it. But if you're actually playing it, you won't always have the ball, actually have to go out for passes, rely on other people.. which is sometimes amazing, and sometimes a pain in the ass.

I'm not a fan of football. However, I refuse to call it anything other than football, because that is what it is. A ball game that you use your feet for and pretty much nothing else unless you're being a twat. I dunno what American football is, so I'll call it wimp rugby.

Agreed.

No, but I know the feeling from chainmail. As for throwing yourself at everything without fear, isn't that what you're supposed to do anyway?

Well, YEAH. That's why you don't go face first, you angly your face away and tackle with the shoulder or forehead.

Fair point.

True, but it's more fun to play ball in the dark.

I like sports games, but I refuse to play The Sims. That's too far for me.

Re: Play FREE football?

I've played sports games
I've played real sports.

And though I am much better at the game that I am at the reality. Even more so playing real football my face appears to be a magnet for any type of injury I still much prefer the real sport.

*edit*
I am of course above refering to British Football or "Soccer" however I have also played American Footbal and Rugby and the same face to ball ratio applies
