I think you're able to convert files with Paint.net which is free ware: http://www.getpaint.net/

Firefox uses a Quicktime plug-in to convert .png on the fly. just go to Tools/Add-ons/Plug-ins and click find updates button. search .png or just download Quicktime plug in.
