Drachen or other techy peoples.

So I'm thinking I want to set up a personal cloud.

So should I leave a pc or netbook running with a external drive and use Tonido?

Thoughts?

Why won't the existing cloud services like Dropbox or OneDrive work for your purposes without having to buy more hardware?

I dunno. I don't like the idea of putting anything on someone else's unknown servers.

Re: Drachen or other techy peoples.

You do anyway. You have email, IM and social network stuff going through somebody else's cloud servers. Why not files? The other stuff is even more intimate. Most of my cloud stuff is on MS OneDrive (as an early adopter, I have a lot of free space, plus most of my work and home software integrates with it) and I have my personal offsite backup on Carbonite (in addition to my local external backup drive).

I'm a software guy. I make high-availability web applications. When anyone says to me, "let's buy a server machine", I think of Mr Burns telling Smithers to "send a telegram to the Prussian consulate in Siam via Autogyro". It's not the way it's done anymore. I think in terms of spinning up server instances on VM services like Amazon EC2 or app servers like Heroku. Buying and configuring a hardware server seems like an antiquated pain in the ass to me now and should be avoided at all costs.

Speaking from experience, Dropbox is pretty awesome.

Re: Drachen or other techy peoples.

Oh-k. I'm behind the times. I just mostly want to hit up my mp3s from my phone or mp3 player around the house or transfer this or that from my pc to Gab's. Like personal pictures and information. Quickly. I know that those box's are pw protected and encrypted but I also know NSA. And who says they'll always be in business or never hacked?

Of course, the same could be said about stuff in your house I guess.

Did you even look at Tonido?

:/

Re: Drachen or other techy peoples.

Sounds like Dropbox and Rdio would fit your requirements nicely (although Rdio comes with a monthly fee). Tonido syncs data through their servers but you have to store it locally. It seems like the worst of both worlds: a sync limit and you have to store and back up the data yourself.

Re: Drachen or other techy peoples.

oh-k, Q and D, I'll look into Dropbox as part of my solution. I think a shared drive might do much of what I want, though.

If it's just MP3's and the like..why worry about the NSA? Imagine them with headphones rocking out/singing to your tunes. Maybe you can convert one into liking your musics!?
