Uhg. Listening to the hockey game is making me reconsider that behind the woodshed option. The NY Islanders suck and we had three goals up on the. This is shameful.

Re: Feeling blergh

That's nothing. Game ended 7-4 for the Islanders. Canucks flew down to Cuba for the third period, I think.

That's pretty much the best piece of evidence you could give us that you are in fact female.

Forgive me if I'm being disrespectful here, but, weren't you the one I had the discussion with about the "your body uses more calcium to absorb calcium in milk than the actual calcium in the milk"? And didn't it come out then that you're not actually a medical student?

EDIT: Regarding the calcium thing, no. No it doesn't. You do not incur a net loss of calcium when you drink milk.

I am a medical student, just of a different sort than you are.
You seem to think "medical student" always means doctor or nurse. When, in fact, it means: Doctor, nurse, physicians assistant, pharmacist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, anesthetist, psychologist, radiologist....ect ect ect.

If you want ever further proof...

My University is widely and highly accredited. I am currently in the Biomedical Health Sciences field, set to graduate with Bachealors April 2015, and then am going right back for a Masters of Occupational Therapy, I might even dual major with another field just to get the experience. I was thinking of tossing Radiography in there since it's a lighter load than the M.OT and actually shares a LOT of the classes that I am already due to take. Don't ever doubt once that I am not what I said I am, just because we disagreed on something that is one of many things widely debated about in the medical field.

And I double checked the calcium thing, I get varying answers depending on which profs I ask. Turns out this is actually something very WIDELY debated in the field and depending on whom you ask you will always get a different answer.

But honestly, my strong suit is more biology than nutrition. You wanna talk to me about the inner workings of your cells and how they function we can chat all day. Psychology, too, god do I love me some Psych especially Abnormal. I would take that as my major towards a career but there's no jobs out there for it right now. I know so many people with Psych degrees who are getting severely underemployed.

Nutrition isn't my field (nor is it required for my major, though I may end up taking these courses anyway as electives. Always good to know), so I just go by what my profs have told me for that.

Now...I'm done with serious mode, I come here to relax not to argue/stress.

Re: Feeling blergh

Some of the calcium is rendered virtually inaccessible due to pasturization, and some people will never get enough calcium strictly from milk, but I've never seen any good studies proving the whole calcium lost to lactose buffering deal. Studies, yes. Ones I'd spend time defending, no.
But what the fuck do I know? I just write porn.
That's communication.
Due to common usage, I'm pretty sure that a medical student is expected to be a person studying to be a doctor of medicine much as an engineering student is expected to one day be an engineer. What you are saying may be 100% valid, but is very likely to be conveying the wrong message. A communications failure.
Either A) choose different term, or
B) define your usage of the term before or shortly after using the term.

But still watch out. Doctors are particularly prickly about the naming because of the amount of time being spent fighting off quackery. Because doctor is not an owned and regulated term like engineer, they have to contend with all manner of doctor of batshit. Engineers just share the term with folks running trains. Not much potential for harm there because the train dudes aren't building bridges and buildings, but trust me the engineering associations stomp out folks who do give it a try with hobnailed boots. Unfortunately there is this common and particularly offensive breed of assholes who say they can do stuff like cure cancer with crystals and just love to be called doctor. Case in point.

So no, you are not a medical student.

Medical student ONLY means you are directly on the path to getting an MD or DO degree. I don't know what you're being told or why you're being told that, but there is indeed a distinction. People going to nursing school are nursing students, not medical students. People going to podiatry school are podiatry students, not medical students. People going to dentistry school are dental students, not medical students. People doing physician's assistant programs are called PA students, not medical students. People going to medical school are medical students. You're not going to medical school and it doesn't sound like it's even part of your plan, so you're not a medical student.

YOU are an undergraduate. You're, what, a Junior? You don't even have a Bachelor's degree yet. YOU aren't even trying to be a doctor. I'm sure you could if you wanted -it's not a question of your ability- but your path of choosing is different than that of doctor. Your responsibilities will be different. What you know will be different. Stop saying you're a medical student. You are mistaken.

It's a serious mistake. Getting into actual medical schools, DO or MD, is extremely hard and competitive. It's not just some choice you make. By calling yourself a medical student you are blatantly disrespecting all of us ACTUAL medical students who have gone through a considerable amount of stress and sacrifice to be where we are, the likes of which the average college student looking to get in and out in 4 years has never even heard of. Just to be CONSIDERED by an American medical school you need one year of biology with lab, one year of general chemistry with lab, one year of organic chemistry with lab, and one year of physics with lab. And you should mostly have A's in those classes. Certain schools even want a couple of classes more on top of those. .

And furthermore, even though actual medical students STILL aren't doctors and thus are totally ill-suited to giving medical advice, it is very easy for us to alarm people because they know that we know stuff, and often think we know more than we do. You, who do not have any sort of clinical background and are not a medical student, should not be raising any sorts of alarms. You should not be uttering the phrase, "As a medical student," ever, but especially not in response to someone's list of signs and symptoms. I don't care what school you're from bro. If you're a junior in college, you don't have enough medical knowledge to advise anyone on anything. Since people know you study biology, they'll come up to you, but you should have one cookie cutter response to ALL of them: "If it concerns you, then you should go see a doctor."

Everyone in the medical field has their role in helping patients. It benefits no one if occupational therapists start calling themselves physicians and dentists start calling themselves radiologists.

You have been mislead and it would behoove you to correct your thinking on this matter.

EDIT: And as a medical student, just like all my other medical student classmates, EVERYTHING is supposed to be my strong suit until I specialize after I graduate. In June I am going to take an 8 hour exam that will include: anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, nutrition, pharmacology, behavioral science, immunology, and microbiology. I'm probably missing something. I happen to like nutrition so I tend to do more extracurricular study in it, but I have an excellent knowledge base to understand the biochemistry of it as well. We don't get the luxury of choosing not to focus on some aspect of health or disease because it isn't interesting.

Re: Feeling blergh

I did great for much of today, then not so great, then slept. I’m going back to sleep in a mo. I know y’all are terribly concerned about my wellbeing though.

Any time I’m capable of SIXTEEN hours of sleep, I’m fighting something. I wasn’t terribly uncomfortable today but I was wiped out and able to reschedule work for the week so I let myself drift in and out for much of the day. Evidently, I needed it. No gut upset, no acid reflux, no cramps. All I was left with was sinus congestion but it had loosened way up and mucus was moving, which is better than being stuffed up. My skin’s not peely or cracky anymore thanks to lotion and lip balm. My nostril piercing stinks every time it moves in my nose but, unfortunately, that’s normal; dead skin cells and bacteria build up within the fistula, on the jewellery and, when you move the jewellery, you often push it into your nose and smell it. Bleh. It’s not significantly worse than usual though and there’s no discharge or pain or swelling so yay.

I pushed it too hard tonight though and the gut rot + itchy, swollen lips + cramps from hell returned. Getting back inside, slathering my mouth in petroleum jelly and drinking a bunch of fluids resolved just about everything. As for the cramps, yesterday was day one of my cycle. I’m four days from total relief from menstrual pain. In the meantime, I really only feel them when sitting so literally walking them off and lying resolve the issue.

I’m good, not going to die. I just need to take it easy for another couple days.

Back to bed.

Get off your fucking high horse. It's common sense that when you are in as much pain as she was describing you go to the doctor. Did you notice I didn't go and say "you have such and such" or "so and so is wrong." No, I SAID GO TO THE FUCKING DOCTOR AND GET HIM/HER TO CHECK IT OUT. I gave no actual "medical advice" other than..."GO TO A DOCTOR WHO CAN." I mentioned the mortality rate thing as a semi-joke since Males have a higher mortality rate, whereas female have a higher morbidity...because most males refuse to go to the doctor when something is wrong which leads to the issue only getting worse.

It's common fucking sense that when something is going that wrong you go to a professional (and hopefully you have the insurance to cover it...). And the fact that you didn't recommend the same astonishes me. Do you know for 100% certainty that it wasn't something serious? Do you? If so speak up, if not then my recommendation to go to a physician stands, and any sane person would agree. I mean, honestly, what would it take you to actually go to a Doctor? An amputation?

But you are so intent on acting like a total douche that you are looking for every reason belittle someone else. Actually...you remind me a lot of the character in your avatar, minus the Joker makeup. It's no wonder you chose an image that's a modified version of one of Hugh Laurie as Dr.House (and I'll be honest...I read your posts in his voice which is actually both a good and bad thing...).

Now are we done arguing? I rather hate showing my mean side in public...it's not a nice person and I try only to keep it reserved for people I actually hate.

Edit: As for your test...I honestly wish you the best on it. I hear horror stories about the various tests required for the various fields and the stress that it puts the students under. One of the nursing students at my school that I am friends with broke down crying when he TEAS went to question 79 (not sure how they work where you are...with ours if the test cuts you off after question 78 you are guaranteed that you passed the test. If it goes beyond 78 you might have failed but you can't quite be certain). My brother, actually, is due to take his TEAS as well....my whole family is in the field in one way or another. I'm going for what I described above...one brother is about to get a Masters in Psychology (which is why I know how hard it is to get employed. He is having trouble finding any good paying jobs right now), and the other just started in Radiography. Kinda crazy to think about, really, that all 4 of us ended up in Healthcare fields (happy? I adjusted the wording. If it makes you feel better Ill say "Healthcare" instead...call it an offer of peace because that DOES apply.)

@ Keile - like you don't know.

@ Keile and bozo - uhoh, dueling medical students.

Are we going to have to lock this thread? Maybe move it to FBS?

As for why I upset you? That was an accident, sorry about that. If it makes you feel any better I've called men "Ma'am" and women "Sir" to their faces at work on accident @.@

As for the other thing...I'm done with it.
