Just on the basis of popularity, the light novels are pretty good. But, not insanely popular like "Suzumiya Haruhi" or "Zero no Tsukaima". Personally, I'm more into "Wa ga Ya no O-Inari-sama" and "Asobi ni Iku yo", so I haven't spent any time in following the "Kanokon" light novels yet. I'm currently going to spend my time focusing on "Akuma de Shoujo"　and "C-cubed" so it'll be a while before I make that venture in any case.

So, I wouldn't recommend the anime if you want the story. Just to give you an idea of how condensed the anime is: Nozomu and her older brother, Saku, make their appearance in the second book, whereas they appear pretty early in the anime. The manga follows the light novels a little more carefully, so if you want a visual experience with some of the story, I would recommend the manga.

This entire anime looks very random. I will never understand how a young kid like the main character(13-14-?) could have a 500+ year old fox spirit attracted to him; and that goes for a good deal of other multiple-hot-women-falling-in-love-with-some-otherwise-boring-and-reluctant-male style stories. They better have a d@mn good reason for it, unlike most stories like this. Sure it is funny that he is resisting, but unless it is a good reason in the context of the story it is technically rape.

Kouta is a first year high school student, he's not a little kid. He's also part Youkai and Chizuru is supposedly a perfect match for him. I haven't gone far enough to understand completely what kind of relationship they share. Evidently, Saku trained with Kouta's ancestors and was Chizuru's former partner.
