Gargantarama DVD: A review
I just got AC Comics first Giantess DVD and I thought I'd let you know what I think. I had previously gotten their "Nightveil" DVD and while that had more extras I think this came off a little better, though this maybe just the central subject matter is of more interest to me. The DVD breaks down into three parts, one is the complete movie of the 1958 version of "The Attack of the 50FT Woman" I believe this runs about 61 minutes, there are no chapter stops so you'll have to fastforward to the "good bit" The box says the film is Digitally Remastered and I think it looks as good as it is going to. I think AC Missed an opportunity by Not having a commentary track, I think they might have been able to do a nice "Mystery Science Thearter 3000" number on the film. The next segment is an "original" short film "The Amazing Colossal Woman" it features the AC Comics character Garganta but in name only, in this story she is a Podiatrist whose husband is cheating on her, as she goes to confront him an alien spaceship, looking like a repainted "Land of the Giants" spaceship model, uses a strange ray to cause her to grow and begin rampaging across Florida . THe story is shot in black and white in order to use stock footage from other 50s monster films like "War of the Colossal Beast", "Earth vs the Spider" and you can even see Clint Eastwood from the climax of "The Tarantula" the problem is this doesn't mesh well with the new footage. There are two main problems with this short film, one is that it seems to have been rushed, the shot of her growing out of her clothes is ruined when skin colored modesty bra is clearly visible under her forearm, (sadly the Alien redresses her for her rampage) something that should have been reshot, this also shows how inexperienced the filmmakers are. The other is that the story to closely resembles "....50Ft Woman" it would have been better to use a variation of the comic book story. All in all the film comes off a little better than other amature Gts videos and hopefully they'll get it right next time. The last segment is a 24 minute retrospective of Gts in film, featuring clips from "30Ft Bride of Candyrock" "Dude Where's my Car" and even the Boogypimps video. It not bad but with the exception of the making of shots of the "Colossal Woman" short and a quick animatic of another upcoming Gts video their doing there is nothing we havn't seen before but the clips are fairly crisp and well shown. In all I would say it was worth the 24.95 I paid, if your going to get "....50Ft Woman" on DVD this is as close to an extras package as your going to get. I might suggest contacting AC Comics and make so suggestions as what you'd like to see on the next one.
