a la Carte pricing makes more sense for all involved, I think, but very few sites offer that sort of forward-thinking from management. "It's a monthly fee because that's what EVERYBODY does!"

Just how the mind works. Remember how guys only think with one head at a time. Except for me. I gain amazing spriting powers whilst I have an erection. Everyone else though, they tend to get a bit dumber when dealing with porn.

It was actually explained to me at one point that the subscription model is targeted toward the lazy user. They subscribe, forget to unsubscribe, and they're still paying a monthly fee years later when the site has stopped updating.

I agree that a la carte pricing would be a better model, and more profitable. It would also prevent the exact users I just mentioned. But subscriptions lead to a consistent income, while a la carte requires consistent updates to make consistent income.
