I am not autistic, and I still have to sing the alphabet song to figure out certain letters. ):

Though, really. When I was young my mom would get on me for that too. Granted, she still flips out of I talk about this stuff in my office though. I just have a bajillion anxiety disorders is all.

I remember a couple of times in my life when I had refresh my memory of the alphabet. Just a couple as a adult. But it was more of a brain fart. Oh, well.

I am very mildly Aspergers too. I honestly take offense when people compare it to autism. Aspergers is an illness that makes you a socially inept nerdy type, not a rainman.

I don't exactly take offense, but it is annoying when that happens.

What was even more annoying is going to a group that was supposed to offer discussion and support for aspergers and find they only talk autism, it was like they were using the term aspergers as a more acceptable name for it, that was upsetting when that happened.

Re: My mom is crying because I reveal 'personal' information to friends.

I know I'm going to get shat on for this but I get a little miffed when I see anyone lacking social skills being diagnosed with Asperger's. Asperger's is an austism spectrum disorder and is characterized by autistic behaviours accompanied by poor social skills. Being socially clueless is just that - being socially clueless. It alone is not a syndrome or disorder.

Asperger's pertains to many elements of a person. The original description was physical clumsiness and lack of empathy towards peers while posessing verbal communication skills. Sinse the work of Dr. Hans Asperger, the syndrome has recquired restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interest, significant difficulties in social interaction, and sometimes atypical use of language in order to give a diagnosis of Asperger's. Physical clumsiness is of less interest to most diagnosticians though it is often the case.

People constantly tell me "I think your boyfriend has Asperger's and/or ADHD." It drives me fucking crazy. Yes, he exhibits symptoms of both disorders. No, he doesn't have either. We have had him assessed. He is quirky. He's eccentric. Ehxibiting a single symptom of a disorder does not equate to having it though!

I believe that most of everyone has the ability to change themselves. It's just if your will is strong enough to try. People give up on making themselves better because it's hard and they might fail. This ADD and ADHD are just excuses for people who don't want the responsibility to try and succeed. Now their are real cases that qualify but 95% of the reported cases are parents that want to tell their teachers "He has a disease" dope him up and forget about him. I'm probably gonna get fried for saying all this but really this is all rediculous. You can report all the cases you want that prove me wrong but I will just ignore them and keep trying to succeed. People hold their own destinies in their hands, it's just them that choose to either hold them back or let them soar.

I'm giving you a reserved "/signed"

I think you are understating the condition a bit, but I agree with your premise.

I'm stoic to a fault.

I fear that in time, it will turn into Oppresive Expressioin Disorder (which will be part of Depression), and try to put me on Mood Elevators.

On that day, I will punch anyone that diagnosed me having that with full power, then head to Cuba to avoid criminal charges.

I could launch at you for this, but I'm going to hold back.

I've seen first-hand people who would fit your definition and succeed by 'force of will' as you put it, and I've lived with people who would prove you wrong.

It's not just a matter of will. That's like saying someone with no legs can grow 2 new ones just be willing it hard enough. It ain't going to happen. Certainly there are ways to help that someone walk by themselves, prosthetic limbs and the like, but it will never be the same thing.

Certainly there are always going to be people out there who will use such things as an excuse, I know one who does just that, and it's infuriating to watch.

And there are those who will bypass their problems and succeed in spite of them. Again, I live with someone who fits this bill.

But the same is true of any and all people....by all means have an opinion, just don't be afraid to change it or to accept it might be the wrong one, and if you're not willing to accept proof that you might be wrong about your assumption...

Then you're right, you'll get hammered for being close-minded by more than a few people.
