thats a stupid reason, but not the first time I've seen sites like that, if thats the case can someone tell us poor non US what show it is so that way we have an idea what everyone is getting all excited for

It's definitely possible to use a free proxy address from a US server list. However, you just have to find an address that allows certain traffic. I haven't done it in a while...BUT

You can try to use Google's translator as a free proxy list. I've done it in the past and it worked pretty well. Check out this link for more instructions
