Re: Health Care Passes the US House!
Where do you get this from? You act as though all medical science was controlled by some greedy pharmacist who just wants to sell you his pills. I guess all the HIV and AIDS research goes toward making Viagra or something, right? Well that's what you want us to believe it seems. Do you think that all the donations people collect to help fund research into terminal illness just goes into the pockets of some mad scientist?

Re: Health Care Passes the US House!
I wonder what's next on the To-Do list? Perhaps fixing the economy? Or maybe giving out jobs? Or will more bitching ensue for months to come after this? Stay tuned after these short messages...

Medical advances are to be expected from a really big, really wealthy nation (whether those advances are preventative or otherwise.) It would be worrisome if that weren't the case.

Re: Health Care Passes the US House!
Except the amount the US comes out with is highly disproportionate compared to the socialist healthcare states. Socialized healthcare makes it unprofitable to invest in medical research and so they don't.
But here's the big question. To all those who like to throw accusations at me and others like me of being uncaring of the plight of the poor and the sick, I ask you this question. Debt is spiraling out of control, our economies are all hurting and the spending on these programs is higher than it's ever been with no end in sight. By all mathematical calculations imaginable, these systems are not sustainable. So if you honestly care about the poor and the sick, then enlighten me: All the people who right now are reliant on the welfare state programs to the point where they have no means to seek alternatives, what do you think is going to happen to them when our governments run out of money? I'm listening...

Re: Health Care Passes the US House!
You know, the government has been running the public school system for decades. If one looks at how the schools in this country are doing, it makes one wonder why letting them handle health care is a good idea...

Once the election is over though, "the people" have little or no control over the behaviour of the government. The government often is a horrible misrepresentation of the people.

It's all a sham anyway even if this were not so because democracy is nothing more than glorified mob rule. If you don't approve of a leader and he gets elected, tough! There is nothing admirable about a majority forcing their will upon the minority whatsoever and as Rachel explained, all elections do is encourage the political class to be on their best behaviour during election time and then that completely goes out the window once they're in. Obama's long list of broken promises is proof of that. For the genuinely curious, a very in depth study on both the US's and Canada's healthcare systems, both are heavily sourced. US's Canada's Do keep in mind, these videos are for the genuinely curious only. If your first impulse to seeing a different opinion is to hurl accusations and ad hominems, these vids are not for you.

Re: Health Care Passes the US House!
Low-income families are already provided national insurance called Medicaid. Problems happen when someone is just above that line. This is the result of fuzzy ideas like "low income families." Without numbers, those words are useless. But people are stupid. People hate numbers. And that doesn't just go for Americans. Because if we spoke of numbers, people would see how ridiculous it is to provide Medicaid to a family grossing up to $25,000/year but not the family that grosses $25,500/year (numbers are ballpark). Same thing with forcing insurance on said "low income families."
And it's not true that Americans don't want cures. Use that logic to explain the recent wave of vaccinophobia that has spread throughout the country. The vaccine is the best clear-cut example of preventative medicine and people have shunned it for symptomatic relief instead.
