While on the subject of that show, it was ridiculous how they constructed the fight. The samurai aimed and fired his bow while the Viking stood there like a lemon, not even using his shield to cover his body. Sorry, but no. They shouldn't just compare the fighters weapons class by class, they should see what the weapons do when against the rest of the enemy arsenal too.

On a side note, the Deadliest Warrior Game coming out soon looks like it'll produce some shits and giggles.

Re: Deadliest Warrior
I'm of mixed feelings after that premiere. Last season, I went out thinking that the variables they program into their simulations were too narrow to properly address each sides abilities. Best example being non lethal weapons; Despite the fact that a stun grenade would lead to a huge increase in killing power since it can be used indirectly prior to lethal weapons, their effects seemed muted in the results. Also, from what I can tell the fights were all played out one vs one on the computer and they just made it a group for the acting out portion. Samurais excell more at honourable one on one combat while a Spartan is stronger for every other Spartan with him. ( Which makes his victory even more sweet for me
![]() There were just too many little gaps in their logic to convince me of their validity. A great example being the fact that all but one pirate weapon just didnt make it past the knight's armor, the one that did not being so unreliable that it still wouldnt really make a big dent, yet he still won based solely off the fact that he had gunpowder. So I was going to give it the premiere of the second season before I deleted it from my DVR. Now, the mixed feelings come from when they recapped the first season in a grand finale perfectly in my mind, and then followed up with a convincing argument for the two sides in the new season premiere. The determining factors seemed to start including SOME of the variables that I found lacking in season one. Despite the technological superiority of the samurai, did you see what that iron armor did to the spear, the overwhelming training of the Spartan won out. They were bred to win, and didnt have silly honor notions like the Samurai's appaerant disdain of keeping themselves alive longer through shields to hold them back. And that showed in their loss to Sparta. But despite the improvements in the new episodes, they still made some bad flubs in my mind regarding practical application of certain weapons. The pipe bomb against the grnade in Spetz vs IRA comes to mind most clearly. The main problem here being that in my retired millitary background, I know how much more effective an assault explosive is over a trap. Pipe bombs require time to put together, set up, and use. Not to mention the bulky weight and unpredictable nature of IEDs. Conversely, EVERY Spetz will have muliple grenades where as one maybe two pipe bombs will be in the IRA's equipment loadout. Furthermore, it can be propelled forward while staying reletively safe behind cover. While a single pipe bomb can do more potential damage than one grenade, the shere number of grenades, paired with their wider array of uses means that in any fight I would ask for a grenade long before a pipe bomb. My money would have been on the more militaristically trained German anti terrorists over the American anti armed thug and bank robber SWAT, but I can see it being a miscalculation on my part. So I will watch another episode before giving final judgement on just how good that show really is. Its still alot of fun every time rooting for my favorite side in each of their match ups, and the final fight sequences are looking alot better this season. Go HUNS! ![]() |
