Re: Teenager werewolf on the movie Drak Shadows

I am stuck by the fact that very often and effect is judged as good or bad not on the quality but what the viewer thinks the creature is "supposed" to look like. I personally didn't "like" the way the werewolf effect looked, but I believe it was in fact a very good effect.

Well, vampires aren't supposed to sparkle, but did you think that was a good effect?

So you mean creatures are judged by people's conceptions of fantasy and not for the quality of the implementation? If yes well this is all a matter of point of view always, I found the werewolf of Dark Shadows very fitting to the context, don't think a more "traditional" werewolf would have had the same comical effect.

Essentially yes, critics and fans will often decide a creature effect is "bad" because the design chosen doesn't fit with their own idea of what the creature should look like. That's not to say it's always the case, sometimes a creature effect is just plain bad and of course sometimes a great effect can be brought down by a poorly executed script or bad performance by and actor. Some of the creature effects in Syfy original movies are visually good but the creature is often too silly to take seriously and the movie is a terrible cheese fest.
