The local community radio station here is volunteer run

I did an volunteer stint at the student station at my university.

This would be my first commercial radio job. I've been working in radio for about 3 years, but Public Radio, not really "real" radio experience.

I think public radio can be more real than corporate.

Yeah, but it doesn't pay very well, and job security (at least at our station) was sketchy at best.

Also, I wasn't a fan of the 6 -10 minute newscast/community events breaks. Too much talking.

That's why I like the non NPR public radio station here. Does t pay at all, but some of the Djs have become local celebrities in their genres, and a lot of music little talk for most of the older music programs
