The new site is incompatible with the old one, a migration of all the content was literally (technically) impossible without a tremendous amount of hours put in. It's the sad, sad truth.

You'll probably also notice the absence of a gallery as of right now - that was actually part of the reason the old site went offline, the popularity combined with the inefficient gallery led to the site being really slow. So, this time around, I want to make sure I do it right, so I'm taking my time designing and thinking about how I want the gallery to work from a technical standpoint. It'll be added eventually, it's just not there now.

Why do sites feel the need for people to register just to look at content. I'll never understand that.

It will do the opposite. Signups are known as a "barrier to entry" for a reason. Unless the user knows exactly what it is and wants entry, the curious will probably just pass it by. Google searchers will never find out about it because the site can't be indexed. Most of the circumstances where content is hidden is because the site wants you to pay for it, the content doesn't make much sense without signing up (like a social network) or because the site wants your data to use for mining or sales purposes. I don't see any of that here. There isn't even any hook or teaser content. Even porn sites do that.

The owner of the site is free to have any content model he wishes, but it just strikes me as odd and somewhat self-defeating.

Of course, why wouldn't you be able to submit your own works? That's the whole point of the site, lol!

And the whole point of registration is, admittedly, a difficult topic and a sore spot for a lot of people, especially for a site like this. What it ends up boiling down to, is A) it's easier to design the site if you know visitors are always going to have a user account (versus hiding or showing different elements on the page based on if someone is logged in or not, multiplied by every single page on the site, and worrying about if an anonymous person could potentially break something by accessing something that only a registered user was supposed to use), and B) if everyone is already logged in when they're viewing content, it's easier for them to thumbs up, comment, etc. which drives community involvement. It's about participation and ease of site design, not numbers.

Plus, it's not like we're asking for your real name, social security number, mother's maiden name, or anything crazy like that. All we need is a username and an e-mail address, neither of which are personally identifiable pieces of information.

Again, it's a sore spot for some people, I understand that, but this is the easiest way to do it. Perhaps in the future when I'm not busy working on a bunch of new features for the site I'll revisit the possibility of opening up the content itself to guests.

It wasn't a complaint about giving you info, it was a suggestion that you are doing your site - and users - a disservice by locking everything away until after you register. The biggest issue is exposure via Google. The writers on your site are losing that as a mechanism for exposure and they are limited to just people registered to your site for readership.

I've never had a problem with your point A (I do this sort of thing for a living). It's just an if statement and you should be checking input for logins on all form posts or other requests that end up writing to the DB anyway. (You are doing this, right???) For point B, I think it's a missed opportunity. Most sites these days have like buttons and comment fields that are fully viewable to a user not logged in. When users try to use them without having logged in, a signup dialog shows up with a way to create an account. It's a great way to push accounts by showing new users everything they can do before they can do it. The way it is now, new users have to decide whether to bother signing up before they know what's available.

I just think that the site could be made much better and more attractive with just a few tweaks with how you think about signups.
