SEE? I've been saying forever that cephlapods would be the first species to overtake us if humans ever lost their footing as the universal apex predator. Admittedly, it's cuttlefish I was particularily concerned about.

A friend and I had an argument about this. She said orcas are our counterpart in the ocean. They're the second most highly distributed mammal on the planet. They're the obvious choice regarding who would become the super predator should our species lose it's status. She's TOTALLY wrong though. The stuff about orcas being our counterparts and highly distributed is true but despite their enormous intelligence and prowess, they do not have the range of physical capabilities needed progress onto land promptly. Octopi in particular have an amazing aray of capabilities that could lead to brain development that would allow them to use their intellect to become the universal apex predator.

TF-Viewer: Well, they don't have nervous systems. Whether they have souls and, therefore, emotions, I couldn't say. I don't dabble in the supernatural. I do love that I can use sea sponge without feeling too guilty though because it has no nervous system and doesn't suffer physically when it's harvested.

Well plants aren't animals, they don't have hearts either but they're still alive, they don't have lungs but they still breathe, they don't have stomachs yet they feed. Who's to say they don't have something else that serves the same purpose as an animals nervous system that we're unaware of? For all we know, we could be causing them excruciating pain everyday. Just by walking on the grass alone we could be inflicting torture on hundreds of living things in a matter of seconds. Imagine, your salad died a horrible death, screaming in agony. But simply because we're unaware of it, it's okay?

Someone can make an argument about anything, and make it seem like they really believed what they said too. You can never tell though right, like... if that orange got to say goodbye to it's family before it was ripped from it's home and had it's precious life fluids drained from it so we could drink it's blood for breakfast!
