It's less about his time-investment and more about his creativity limit; he's an extremely fast programmer but his ability to consistently generate new ideas/expand upon what he's programmed is limited and hence why he programs and allows other people to fill in the creatures in all his games. That's not to say he can't write, but rather he works on projects to inspire himself creatively, and when he stops feeling it, he finds something else to get the juices flowing again.
He's done other MUDs in the past, and this one is surprisingly quick in the development cycle - less fetishy than the single player but allows for far more RP options and actual gameplay than it as well.
