Re: Please Don?t Say (Quality Translation)
You know, even though we jump on newblets for necroposting, why hasn't anyone noticed the trend that the "victim threads" are often the result of someone searching for something that was posted eons ago? If lorekeep would modify the search function to include a immutable maximum cut-off date, then we could theorhetically never have to deal with a necrothread ever again.

Necrothreads are caused by people that can't read post dates, not by being able to search for ancient material. |

Re: Please Don?t Say (Quality Translation)
The real question is why the heck is the untranslated version in Notable Contributions, but not the translated version?
That is far worse then any necrotheading |

Re: Please Don?t Say (Quality Translation)
A rational human being should notice that necrothreads aren't caused by someone not seeing the date on the thread, any more than shooting deaths are caused by holes in people. It's caused by the last date on the thread not being obvious.
Solutions off the top of my head: * implement a thread locking delay - thread is locked, say, 4 weeks after the last post * make older dates more obvious - categorize search results by how recently they've been updated - categorize search results by relevance, but anything older than, say, 4 weeks gets visually differentiated or just put in a different results section half-way down the page. All this still wouldn't have necessarily prevented this necro, because the user may have realized that it was an old thread, but not understood why the attachments were missing. Solutions off the top of my head: * When attachments are removed, replace them with a note saying "attachment removed to free up disk space for new attachments". * When attachments are removed, symlink the old file to an image that says the same thing as the previous solution. The symlink allows one image to be used for every case when an attachment needs to be removed. ...or we could continue ignoring the fact that no one cares about solving the problem and we're actually entertaining ourselves by making fun of users who cause necrothreads. |

Re: Please Don?t Say (Quality Translation)
Sometimes threads are also necroed by people having their own art thread and posting to it rather then making a new thread.
That aside... it is a valid problem: can someone repost that translation?

Your solutions also assume this forum is written from scratch. It is not. It's a purchasable forum software that comes pre-configured and ready to roll. And most of what you recommended pretty much isn't available in vBulliten. There's an unfortunate amount of people who think their ideas are good and don't realize they're not realistically possible. Lorekeep isn't a programmer, and as far as I know, neither is the site admin. They use vBulliten and WordPress, for crying out loud. Both are just drop-in solutions that require minimal upkeep and configuration. Necros are caused by people too stupid to look around and figure out why something is the way it is. So instead, they beg and plead for someone to do everything for them, even if what they want is impossible. And typically when you point it out, they get pissed because you didn't capitulate to their demands. Hence why they're flame bait, really. They ask for it.
