Basic rule of hypnosis, from psychology class no less. You simply cannot tell someone to do something they aren't compliant with. Thus people who are doing stupid things on stage in response to a hypnotist are doing it because they want to do it (an act of showmanship. People love to be part of an act, so they're willing to put up antics to que of a director. An especially good one). Similar cases exist for any act of hypnosis (that, or someone was forced into it through extraneous means).

How does this factor into the ringtone bit? Simply, it works at a lower level, under the assumption that someone would respond sympathetically to the ring. Since it isn't getting anyone to do something against their will (unless they aren't up for raising children, or something to that effect), it may have an effect.

It's not hypnosis, it's subliminal suggestion. And that DOES work. It's been done on a small scale to sell products. Subliminal messages are different than hypnosis, it's more like brainwashing.

I learned about classical conditioning in psychology. It's very similar to this. We are taught to do something without realizing it.

That is one of the strangest things I've heard of. More testing is needed to see if it was really the ringtone that did the trick.

Also if I'm remembering correctly the scientist states that he uses a carrier wave that "opens" the mind up for the acceptance of the sounds that he sends, so it is much more like brainwashing then hypnosis.

The government went to him to de-condition people who were brainwashed by that cult, which he did.

Did you hear what they said at the very end? The guy is working on a sound that will induce the same "Love at first sight" feeling in people. Now that's exciting and very scary at the same time.

I think it only works when it's got that second sound that opens up the mind and it's sort of covered up. Then it's a kind of subconscious thing.
