Re: TF Flash Game the Second

Oh, that's one thing I should mention.

The initial design concept for this game had things like shrinking/growing and the above-mentioned 'going on all fours'. I since realized such things would require an exorbitant amount of time and the end-result would not be as good as one would make it seem.

I don't mind animating hand movements, eye movements, etc, but anything that takes her out of that standard 'looking straight ahead' image is out of my league.

Sorry =/

Also, though I haven't actually tried it yet, I can probably do any number of changes up to 12. So, you don't need 12 if you can't fit 12 (for example, the bunny stage would've been impossible with 12... ears, nose, teeth, eyes, fur, hands, feet, and I don't even know what to do with more than one mental state).

You do bring up a good point. I made the cat stage before the dog stage and didn't think about using an idle animation on any of the parts. I'll think about adding an idle tail flip or an ear flick that occurs while you're still flipping cards.

I wouldn't mind writing some text for it, even.

I can say both the cat and dog game was good. I wish there was text on the dog though.

Re: TF Flash Game the Second

So, I got a PM shortly after I posted this asking if it were possible to allow people to edit this game with their own material. While waiting for clarification on whether this was for images or text, I decided to see if it was possible to utilize custom text.

Turns out I can.

This is stepping into more complicated territory, but if you want to custom-tailor your text, this is how you can do it. As long as you don't change the name of the variables (&ears_2, for example) and you make sure to keep the text file in the same folder as the swf, it will work.

If you know Flash in-text commands like breaklines (\n), well, they don't work. Sorry.

All of the smiles are coded in and it would require quite a bit more of an expedition into coding that I've never tried before to see if I can allow you to customize that, so for now just work your own dialogue around it =p

I'm not sure if I want to do it this way for future stages, though it does make it much easier for me to just pop your dialogue into the game.

I'm gonna get to work on the cow sprite and maybe the animation and see how it goes.

Edit: After a while tinkering around with the cow sprite, I'm starting to see real progress over the old sprite. I realize where I went wrong in the old sprite and have made the necessary changes. Initial looks at this tell me that it's likely not going to be possible to separate the arm/leg from the hoof animations. The arms and legs in this sprite are longer than the original arms, and the size of the hooves is far larger than the size of the gloves / shoes. I do like the spots idea and do plan to draw four sets of spots; one set that goes over her normal skin, one set that shows up on her new arms, one set that shows up on her new legs, and one set that show up on both. Whether this will need four sets of dialogue is up to the one(s) writing it. So far, the list appears to be: ears, horns, face, nose, tail, arms, legs, udders, mental 1, mental 2. If you really want to get to 12, I can add something like a nosering as #11 and then actual grazing as #12. I think the nosering will be... less than cute. And I think grazing could end up being a complicated animation. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm purposely avoiding things that sound complicated, but I've worked with Flash for 6 years now and I know how frustrating it can be to do something that seems so simple. This game alone taught me another frustration. Turns out you can't stack more than 10 images on top of one another. Once the 11th image becomes visible during play, the 1st image disappears. ISN'T THAT FUN! Took me about 3 days just to figure out a workaround for that one >_>

As for the original intention of this post...

To re-iterate: this attached file is not a new game; it is a version of the Cat game that allows you to edit the text.

I had a lot of fun with the custom text. It's a nice touch. If at all possible, could you include that in each little chapter of your game?

Re: TF Flash Game the Second

Sure. That's not too complicated. Like I said, with others writing the text, it actually makes it easier for me since all they have to do is write the contents of that text file.

It does make it a little harder to match up special cases, though. For example, in the dog stage, there are several different lines of dialogue based on the state of the tail.

I finished the cow sprite. Dunno if I should post it before I start dropping it into Flash, since it takes quite a lot of work animating and I don't want to have to re-do it all if it's not as good as I think it is.

Here's the dialogue list. This is subject to change as I do the Flash animation.

1) Ears
2) Horns (possible link with ears)
3) Face (does not include nose--just the fur on the face
4) Nose
5) Tail
6) Arms (arms lengthen and she gains hooves--I can make this a long animation if you want to write two lines of dialogue to appear one after the other, but the first line would have to be short)
7) Legs (same as above. Her legs get longer and she gains hooves.
8) Udders (nothing really special here. I can add a drip animation or maybe have her grab at it, but that's up to you all)
9) Mental change 1 (adds "moo" to dialogue, I guess? This is up to the writer(s))
10) Mental change 2 (Up to you. I'm not creative. I don't know if I'm going to want to add an eating animation, but I'll see)

Feel free to write more than 3 for each. Actually, feel free to write pretty much anything you want. I'm outsourcing the dialogue because I just cannot write creatively.

I now have more than a few people interested in writing dialogue, so you can either collaborate, send me individual bits and pieces, or both send me whole files and I take parts of each. I'm trying to make this a community game in a way. I take your suggestions and make them a game.

Re: TF Flash Game the Second

I don't like doubleposting but seeing as this is vastly different from my old post and I don't want them to blend (and because I want to be the first one on page 2...) I'm going to post again.

One quick note about the cow / bunny stages--I consulted a friend of mine (an actual artist!) about the looks of the new sprites and got a few suggestions made for them, but overall they got a thumbs up so I'm going to go ahead and animate them once I make those changes and write up a list of dialogue just like this post.

So I like the idea of having external text files quite a lot. I figure I can basically animate everything, write up the ideas for unique text, and just have you fill it in. If there's any more unique text you want added in, it will be easy to include it. The best part is that you can see how it plays with the pre-existing file right away.

Here's the dog stage with the dog text file with what needs to be filled in, the contents of which are:

&ears_1=
&ears_2=
&ears_3=
&mind_a1=Collar level 1 (ball not triggered)
&mind_a2=Collar level 2 (ball triggered)
&mind_b1=Ball level 1 (collar not triggered)
&mind_b2=Ball level 2 (collar triggered)
&eyes_1=
&eyes_2=
&eyes_3=
&fur_1=
&fur_2=
&fur_3=
&nose_1=
&nose_2=
&nose_3=
&tail_1=
&tail_2=
&tail_3=
&feet_1=
&feet_2=
&feet_3=(This is triggered if her hands have also been triggered) (These two only apply when she is in the final mental state)
&feet_4=(This is triggered if her hands have not been triggered)
&hand_1=
&hand_2=
&hand_3=(This is triggered if her feet have also been triggered) (These two only apply when she is in the final mental state)
&hand_4=(This is triggered if her feet have not been triggered)
&smile_1=
&smile_2=
&smile_3=
&tongue_1=
&tongue_2=
&tongue_3=
&wag_1=These three wags
&wag_2=are based on the
&wag_3=lack of a tail
&wag_t1=These three wags
&wag_t2=are based on the
&wag_t3=inclusion of a tail
&win=
&lose_1=
&lose_2=
&lose_3=

When not specified, 1 2 and 3 follow the basic mental pattern that I've posted several times now. Again, for the people writing for me (thanks again, by the way), if you think there's something that would be neat to have added in, feel free.

By the way, if there's a facial expression that you think doesn't line up with the context of your text, I'll remove it. The basic animations across all of the stages are: looking up, looking down, and smiling. The dog stage has her wagging her tail as soon as both the tail and the wag cards are paired. She also does a doggy tongue thingy when you pair the tongue and get a mental state. I'll add others if people think something else can go in.

This file is the dog stage, but it still does not have any text. Its purpose is to allow the writers an easier understanding of how their dialogue will fit in with the existing animations. If you would rather write your own text and keep it for yourself, that's fine too, but for people expecting this to be a new game, it's not =p

Edit: For the few people who got this, I received a PM about some bugs I missed. I have re-uploaded it with these corrections made.

Re: TF Flash Game the Second

Ergh, now this is going to be a triplepost =/

Doing the final cow animations has been giving me more trouble than I had anticipated, but I don't think any of the dialogue lines will change.

&ears_1=
&ears_2=
&ears_3=
&mind_a1=Cowbell level 1
&mind_a2=Cowbell level 2
&mind_b1=Grass level 1
&mind_b2=Grass level 2
&horn_1=
&horn_2=
&horn_3=
&face_1=
&face_2=
&face_3=
&nose_1=These three nose lines
&nose_2=are based on not having
&nose_3=the new mouth yet
&nose_m1=These three nose lines
&nose_m2=are based on having
&nose_m3=the cow mouth
&mouth_1=These three mouth lines
&mouth_2=are based on not having
&mouth_3=the nose along with it
&mouth_n1=These three mouth lines
&mouth_n2=are based on having
&mouth_n3=the nose
&tail_1=
&tail_2=
&tail_3=
&feet_1=
&feet_2=
&feet_3=(Final Mental state only)This is triggered if her hands have also been triggered)
&feet_4=(Final Mental state only)This is triggered if her hands have not been triggered)
&hand_1=
&hand_2=
&hand_3=(Final Mental state only)This is triggered if her feet have also been triggered)
&hand_4=(Final Mental state only)This is triggered if her feet have not been triggered)
&spots_1=These spots dialogues
&spots_2=are triggered when
&spots_3=she has her original arms and legs
&spots_a1=These spots dialogues
&spots_a2=are triggered when
&spots_a3=only her arms have changed
&spots_l1=These spots dialogues
&spots_l2=are triggered when
&spots_l3=only her legs have changed
&spots_b1=These spots dialogues
&spots_b2=are triggered when
&spots_b3=both her limbs have changed
&win=
&lose_1=
&lose_2=
&lose_3=

Once again, feel free to change this to suit your own writing needs. If you don't want to write something for each of the four spot images, then don't! Just copy the text you wrote for one set for all four. I honestly don't care.

I know this will be easier to write for with the animation to go along with the text. I'm going to try to get it done by tomorrow morning, but no promises. In the meantime, get cracking on the Doggie text!

ps - In the event that the dialogue doesn't get written in a week or two, I'll write it myself, but I make no promises about the quality of this dialogue =/

Edit - disregard all that! I was on a hot streak and actually managed to finish it!

Note: for people testing this / using it as a writing guide, please tell me if it runs really slowly on your machines or not. There's nothing I can to do fix it, but it will be nice to gauge other people's computers as mine is pretty high-end. Also, please report any bugs you notice. I saw one during testing where the pairs count increased twice on a match, but was not able to duplicate it.

This is a beta version of the Cow stage with no dialogue written -- only the animations are implemented here. If you'd rather play the version with dialogue, then wait patiently for the writers to write or write the dialogue yourself =)
