Here's what Harry Knowles has to say about Avatar. I agree with pretty much all of it. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/43430

Re: Go see Avatar
It seemed like a blend of Dances with Wolves and Dune (except the dessert planet is now planet Endor but the protagonist is a messianic character).
Still... I liked the movie. Very pretty. And giant robots. And perty blue catpeople. And bizarre xenomorphs. So what if the ideas aren't original. "There's nothing new under the sun" Also, it'd be cool if there was an alternate ending for this movie; where the humans and Na'Vi lose because the Protoss swoop in at the last moment and wipe out everyone. Entaro Adun!!!!

Re: Go see Avatar
I'm hearing an even number of good and bad reviews so I still haven't made up my mind on whether I'll see it or not.

Re: Go see Avatar
If you want good CGI AND a plot go see District 9. If you want a fantasy world with no real plot to get in the way and plenty of PC preaching... see Avatar.
It's Dances with Wolves... in space... with blue people. |

Re: Go see Avatar
Have you actually seen it? No one who is whining about it has actually even seen it. Roger Ebert gave it a rare perfect four stars. It's got an 83 percent fresh rating on rotten tomatoes. Everyone who has seen it is saying great things about it. Go see it for being a fun fantasy adventure. I'm not saying the story is great. It's not. But for two and a half hours you get to explore an alien world, ride around on flying dragons in 3d. It takes you to another world for a while.
If you can't enjoy a movie with cat people and giant robots in it, you just don't know how to have fun.

Re: Go see Avatar
Dances With Smurfs, or, Ferngully II: Electric Boogaloo is very very long, has a thoroughly unoriginal plot and characters that can be difficult to connect with at times. That being said, it is completely worth it.
I meant it, every single damn second of this movie is worth seeing, in 3D especially. From the very first scene when the protagonist wakes up in zero gravity I was hooked, and while it is a polished version of a story that everybody has seen a million times over it is still compelling and engaging. Yes there are some faults but overall it is an incredible journey, your disbelief will be suspended the entire time. But DO NOT go in to see it with the hopes of having the floating mountains explained. ... HOW?! HOW ARE THEY FLOATING, MOVIE?!! IT MAKES NO SENSE, YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE THEM BOBBING IN THE AIR LIKE THAT WITHOUT EXPLAINING IT! AND WHERE THE HIGH HOLY HELL DO THE WATERFALLS COME FROM?! DOES IT JUST RAIN ENOUGH UP THERE AS TO KEEP A STEADY FLOW OF WATER?! BECAUSE THAT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE!
