Am I the one who's been drawing for the least time?.... I've been drawing since 2002, I guess I was about 15 then. Got somewhat serious in 2004. <.<;

Well I know why I can't compare with any of you i'v only been drawing for a year. I'm getting better but it's a slow process for me. I should add a link to my DA but I don't think my art is good enough yet.

I've drawn cartoon characters for a while... but I lack a scanner... I have lots of normal art I'd like to show.

I've been drawing religiously since I had my first thought. I always wanted to be an artist. I was never talented, I still have no talents.... but it's practice that brings skill to your hands. Whenever I was upset because I saw artwork so much better than my own, and by people much younger... I swallowed hard and realized that if I give up now, all that practice will have gone to waste. I've never given up and never will... and now I've surpassed many who said I'd never amount to anything. Soon I'll be a professional, and I already have a large artwork resume. I try to spend about 4 hours a day (actually night) working on my artwork. Growing up, I brought a sketchbook or blank paper everywhere I went... even the movie theaters. (stupid huh?)
Draw, draw draw... and never feel ashamed of tracing to start, but quickly realize you must abandon tracing and draw without the training wheels. |

I've been drawing since I was 3. Remember drawing cars and stuff better then I can now in fact.
... ![]() Anywho, every few years I would switch styles, taking with me some stuff I had learned perviously and putting it to use in the next iteration. Before I switched to the style I have now, I had drawn a comic series while I attended chemistry classes. Aced the class too, somehow. O_o Anywho, before that (about 8+ years ago), I had a sketch book with a hidden section just for the less... normal artwork. Mostly TF stuff too, interestingly enough. ![]() ![]() |

Practice practice practice.... and when your done with that , practice some more.
Seriously it's the only way you'll improve or gain any ability. I was going to try to put an online beginers guide to doodling up somewhere but became awfully lazy... as I do with most things. The basics of drawing to me are the ability to draw lines and shapes , I mean they compose basically everything else a person will draw at some level. Draw circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, 8's , hourglasses. Attempt to draw a line as straight as possible without a ruler, try to make curvy lines, jaggged lines. I'd like to think that basically anyone is capable of doing atleast this. Practice that basic thing as a warmup before you draw anything seriously, if you can perfect the above it can be transfered to anything else. The second step would be deciding what it is you want to be able to draw. Most artists regardless of style still tend to focus on one thing first and foremost- girls, boys, men, women, animals, still life, vehicles, whatever. Given the content of this forum being what it is I'll assume girls. Those anime books do have some good advice but they seem heavily aimed at the intermediate artist. Someone who is allready familiar with some really basic drawing styles. ultimatly , how good a drawing of a woman looks comes down to consistent proportions. Sure drawing gigantic tits on a girl is fun and goes a long way to earn favour on the process' BE section but if all you have is a floating pair of breasts on a girl that looks like something out of a Dr. Katz cartoon or her arms and legs aren't the right length, perhaps even her neck was drawn the wrong size it creates some jarring artwork. I still have proportioning issues, I consider it to the most difficult problem with drawing. That's why I recommend you get those kinks out first, the fun stuff can come later on, when you've practiced basic proportions and such with both a female and preferably a male as well you'll eventually just 'get' it. Like you'll be able to sketch up a stick figure skeliton and add shapes and lines to it to look roughlylike the outline of a human body. This is where things get much more freeform. You can go the route of many past artists and simply find a style out there you like and attempt to adapt it to your own level of ability while hopefully tweaking it to make it your own style or you can just do real life artwork and adapt it into a completly original manga look , or whatever style of art it is you wanta to be aiming for. This is the step where you want to look at details you like in others artwork, perhaps the why eyes and mouths are drawn, perhaps nipples. Regardless just look at this artwork and figure out through practice how that picture was made and furthermore how to apply it to your own style. Being patient with this whole process is the most important part, you aren't going to go from squiggly stickmen to shehulk overnight. Also it's an ongoing purpose, any artist that says they have perfected themselves is lying to you and themselves. Once you have a level of ability you are comfortable with you'll want to keep drawing to maintain that ability, it's like riding a bike in that it'll come back quickly even if you quit but the more you keep at it the better you'll get. |

I have been practicing art about 5 years. I started at pretty much stick figures, and have been improving at a rapid rate. Though I still find it more than impressive when I see complete pros that aint had to draw for to long. Then again Im self taught.
I found when I started drawing the best thing (for me) was to learn from other artists. I accually started drawing by drawing nothing but DBZ style stuff. then slowly (and still kinda for me) develop a personal style branching off from it. Infact this little thing made me do some archiving and dug up alot of old stuff. Ill show you what I mean on how my art has kind evolved. Trust me nothing is worse then when I started drawing. Warning super ugly art beyond this point: Now that I look back some of my older stuff really had some good details and concepts behind them. just my art now is more complex, but the ideas aren't as unique. I attached some of my art. Progressing older to newer sort of. Just to kinda show that I sucked really bad when I started too.

i started drawing back around the 5th grade or so.mostly emulating my brother, seeing him draw all the time it was one of those "i wanna be able to do that" kinda things.i really didn't get any better for a few years, just eyeing and drawing characters that already existed.
lol, my first character was m-man! he was just a bowith a smilie face for his box arm and legs, his hands and feet were m's.though ive never really read any books on how to draw, ive just gotten innately better by looking over others peoples works constantly over the years.

I scribbled and doodled up until my junior year of high school, then I final took a crash course in cartooning from a buddy of mine in study hall. From there, I took it myself. Lots of hard work, and about 7 years later, I am what I am. Yar
