Maybe they used it *too* much and populated themselves right out of a sustainable environment? I mean, usually an increase in birth rate and population is preciptated by technological advances- the ability to keep and store more food, to gather it more quickly, to help keep young children alive even when they were sick. If you've got a fertility idol short-circuiting the entire cycle, eventually you're going to find yourself in a situation where you've got more people than you know how to feed, so your choices are let them starve or find somewhere else that *does* have enough food to support their population. So maybe that's why they all abandoned the place and left the idol behind where it couldn't upset the balance any more than it already had..?
