It depends on where the manga is. Thing is as soon as production of an anime starts of a manga that isn't even finished yet, you'll get issues of continuity.
If the anime starts catching up with the manga, they'll either have to cut it short or start making episodes that count as fillers because it ain't part of the original story. Or make up an entirely different orginal story. The first series of Fullmetal Alchemist comes to mind.
From what I've seen it's not uncommon to do half a season and then continue later on.
Half a season being around 12 episodes.
Which is why you see so many ridiculous fillers in Naruto and flashbacks.

I really hate that they do this......this very thing is what led in my opinon one of the greateast anime in the last few years, Soul Eater, to having an abomination of an ending. the manga wan't finished so when they got to the end they went from really well though out story of over 50 eps to an ending pulled entirely out of there asses.

That pissed me off to no end.

They need to start a new season with someone waking Maka up, because she was having a "Madness nightmare", retconning the crappy anime ending.

Indeed. Although like clickme mentioned they did a suprisingly good job with Fullmetal when I think about it in retrospect. I?m guessing that companies want to cash in at certain moments and just start an anime despite the manga on which it is being based ain?t done yet. It immediately reminds me of how Love Hina and Negima Magister Negi Magi ended as well. It?s like ow we?re going to have to end it here, want to know how it truly ends?
Go buy the manga. Like the entire anime was some sort commercial for the manga.
Sure that?s a bit silly and far fetched thing of me to say, but still.

That's why I liked Fullmetal. They didn't jsut pull an ending out of their ass, they worked the way towards it. More or less the entire last half of the anime was made independent of hte manga to facilitate a proper ending, which was done really well IMO, and was left open enough for a movie. I recommend watching booth FMA and Brotherhood, though I do love Brotherhood a bit more, if only cus Mustang gets to be more badass and the end was amazing.

Haha, ye I only know far too well, owning the manga while it was still being released in English format when FMA started. In a way I was already spoiled for like the 45 first episodes of Brotherhood since I owned 23 volumes of it.
And now I'm spoiled because I saw the anime end before the manga's end, haha.
Though it's uncanny how many details I seemed to notice, not just between FMA and Brotherhood but also between the manga and Brotherhood itself.
As Al would say it: Being passionate about something is a talent in it self.
But in the end it sure was worth, King Bradley single handely take on a tank blew my mind.

Ahaha, but the others have a point we're going off-topic now, better stick to manyuu.

I just tried all the general Japanese websites and I couldn't find anything. Here's to hoping someone out there is better at finding episodes than I am right now
