Re: Wolves
I do agree with the idea of women being played against type (not just matronly and sophisticated, but usually when I see it done, it's for one of three things: sex appeal (generally with vampires or demonesses), punishment ("American Werewolf In Paris," to a certain extent), or empowerment ("The Howling," "Suck").
If a female TF is featured, it usually means that's the only one to feature. Once in a while, it'll be for a good story reason, though it'll be with a character that's been established for a while (over a half hour of the movie, or most of a TV show season). Unlike the TF community, mainstream has to answer to budgets, focus groups, promotion, marketability, profitability, controversy, and a host of other obstacles the TF community avoids by working specifically within a niche market. Plus, let's face it, quality's been largely downhill since CGI put the likes of Rick Baker and Company out of a job. A long time back, my Mother and I were talking about a story idea I wanted to do. She does read paranormal romance, and while not a TF fan, isn't averse to the idea in a well-done plot. Part of the plot outline had the main female character becoming a werewolf (admittedly, it was somewhat predicted, but also kinda out of the blue) and taking some legal revenge on someone else. She thought it was a bad idea, saying: "You don't want your main character becoming a bitch, figuratively or literally." My stance is to see mainstream things for the story, and if I'm lucky, once in a while a good TF will be included ("AWIL" and "AWIP," "Suck," "In the Mouth Of Madness," "John Carpenter's Vampires," "Asylum Night,") and a lot of anime/Hentai fall into this category ("The Devil Lady" and "La Blue Girl") especially. Tithe by Holly Black falls into this category as well, as do several of the Gael Baudino books (elf TFs). When I want direct TF, without compromise or judgement, I go straight to the community. Often, the community also provides great story to go along with it.
