Re: Rick Baker Design of “Cursed” Werewolf

I actually heard an explanation recently for why movie posters are so terrible these days, and it might be cross applicable. The man who did the posters for Star Wars can't get work anymore, and they just use photographs of the cast for them. Their reasoning is that they'll have focus groups where they'll put up a photo poster and an illustrated poster, and then ask which poster makes potential viewers more likely to see the movie. They'll reply neither, which proves to the studio that they can just go with the cheaper option and lose out on nothing.

Lots of people want to see werewolf movies. A whole lot of them have no preference for digital vs practical. I can think of tons of reasons why digital is cheaper than practical, but I think the largest is that every scene you do digital is one more scene you don't need your principal actors hanging around for.

Sure, but if those backers remain consistently shit-headed in their decisions, there's always the option of...you know, KILLING them. Yeah, my movie doesn't get made (plus I'm in prison), but I've also done the human race a favour.

Re: Rick Baker Design of “Cursed” Werewolf

Certainly the age of practical effects is starting to wither as many other past time things for the future. The margin for digital effects is just advancing so much more and much quicker than the possibilities for practical effects. Especially with the likes of head cap with movies like Lord of the rings/Hobbit, and now crytek, the famous game developer for the game crysis separating their studio for game developing and now cinematics. The way things are going, even though the better the digital standards become and more expensive to achieve, it'll still be much cheaper and efficient that practical. As sad is it is on some degree.

Someone with twitter should tweet Baker and ask if there is test footage of his version of the wolf, or an early demo of a tf scene using his wolf. A guy can dream, can't he?

Practical effects will always be superior for this sort of thing.

Nowdays, even with CGIs the best is a mix of CGI and practical effects. Some things are much easier or impressive to do with CGIs.... but a great deal of things(especially involving actors) will often have more impressive or at the very least constant results using practical effects.

The movie Spring that appeared at TIFF had Gryf-level TFs and it was a mix of computers and practical. Take that as you will but I was really impressed.

One of the best things for practical effects is the better interaction with the environment, in terms of realism, lighting and they help the actor for the performance.
