Yeah, without inundating you with CS jargon too heavily. Discord is based on a suite called electron, which was originally made as a peer to peer way to take web apps offline, making them desktop... web... apps. (I am struggling not to go full code explanation here) But part of that process is the filtering information. Discord makes its money by parsing what you're talking about and building a profile based on that. Like if I talk about monkeys on discord. I might find in google later a suggestion about how to apply to get an exotic animal license, or perhaps a suggestion for checking out the nearest zoo. Location data, topics, all this data is kept in grand aggregate, and sold for profit. Developers, like me, can buy that data and use that to help understand what the market pulse is on projects and help determine when best to launch would be.

That's the nicest and most PC way I can parse that out.

tbh, I really don't use discord that much and I use the browser version and I use it mostly to look for content, and give a few kudos.

Facebook seems to know me pretty well though.

I discuss leggins, then click <3 on a couple of leggings ads, and get inundated with constant stream of leggings and also booty shorts ads. Heh. So I see those, ads for period protection, makeup, jewelry, and local restaurants and nail joints mostly.

I'm surprised I don't see ads for shrink rays. Ha! That's what I really want!

Yeah FB is the worst. They steal eeeverything. And yeah, that is how it do. Regular users usually can't mine you, but some have been... pretty persistent. I've had quite a few slips into DMs individuals. But yeah if there is a process one, I maaaayyyy consider, but like, since I have the one account I have to think of stuff like, my real name's on it and such. But I'm torn from on the one hand I'm like "Oh but what will people say"??? but on the other I just spent an entire weekend at a ren faire as a hot gaelic iron age barbarian with literally a loincloth and a strip of cloth, where I was well received so like I have to wonder just how much I really care...

Oh wow! Ren fair! That sounds like fun. I miss that kinda thing. I mean I just had a big party with friends and new friends, but with the growing breakthrough infections, I'm putting my mask back on in public, and being careful again.

On FB, I use my middle name, and somehow people from work have never bothered me there with maybe one exception.

Yeah I looooove those. I'm from a traditional Scottish family so I got raised to ride horses and swordfight, so I actually like, do the jousts and stuff. See that's the stuff that discord is good for. Showing photos, swords, all that fun incidental stuff. I think that's the spot where apps like that shine over forums. But discrete it is not.

PNW (Pacific northwest) here, Covid is on mostly a decline. There's kind of a right wing area sort of south of the military base but it's kind of an insular community and that's where most of the issues are. If we need to go back to masks, then I'm ready for it, but people were happy and healthy (And fully vaccinated) at the faire.

I wish the Cons were insular here in Jersey. I mean I'm in a fairly Con area but mixed enough. But there is a lot of travel in the state. Like between Philly and NYC, and people commuting to NYC or North Jersey. And visiting the beaches.

I guess the Piney's are insular to some extent. And there are issues with Orthodox areas that ignore reality too.

I'm fully vaxed but I've gone back to wearing masks in crowded places.

Yeah I think I'd do the same in the same situation, but out here it's really like another country. Populations are spread way out and even here in the city, I can walk blocks without encountering another person. There's a couple hubs like the waterfront and market but they all have a collected pathing system and lots of curbside delivery options to lower contact so it's much closer to a European response than many other American states. Tricky part right now is getting a campsite to head out and go to the wild because that's what everyone else is doing! Secluded cabin in the woods? Booked till next year. Lonely log cabin on an eternally snow capped mountain? Nice try.

Oh well, maybe I'll try backpacking and make camp well off in the wilderness somewhere.
