Re: Stupid Creationist!

Actually if you'd asked at this time three days from now it would be WoW. I've foolishly signed up again because a friend just got started.

So you're telling me that no creationist, anywhere, has ever researched evidence debunking the big bang theory or other associated non-creationist views? Really? You're making the assumption that absolutely none of us have ever formulated opinions or read material contradicting secular views? You think there isn't a single accredited creationist scientist in existence? You honestly think we only do this to go on some kind of misguided power trip? This is all rhetorical, mind you. I don't even think I'd want to know if your answer in fear that it could actually be yes.

With that, I'm drawing my commentary on this thread to a close. I'm in no mood to argue with people who are thoroughly convinced that their view on the universe is so incredibly absolute that it can't even be conceived of as anything other than concrete fact.

A special part of me finds it amusing that the insults still fly. Thank you for proving your prejudice.

By the way, whether or not he interrupted her is irrelevant. The desire to inflict physical pain from nothing other than a discussion, heated as it was, is still a definite case of anger management issues. Psychological help would still be advised.

Thank you all very much for your time. You've done a spectacular job of proving my point.

Whenever I get into one of these kinds of discussions it always seems to end with the other side saying 'There's more to life than just facts.' They decide creationism is a part of their religion and thus is justified by having faith in it like everything else religious. As for scientists who believe in creationism I figure they're largely chemists or sociologists or the like. Anything where they can safely produce respectable work without having to come up against unfortunate evidence.

That's the fun thing about science. They have no damn clue what happened to make everything the way it is. I mean honestly your quest to disprove creationism will just end in your frustration. Even undeniable proof of the big bang happening wouldn't change a thing in anyone's religion.

Re: Stupid Creationist!

Nor should it. Science is responsible for stuff that does, or should, work, while religion is there to someone feel better. The problem appears when religion (or possibly more accurately the church) starts thinking it can be science too.

'Scuse me? The church (at least the majority of the modern day one) has never tried to commandeer science. There have been creationism believing scientists who have tried (and in the book Alien linked you to provide a good case for) to explain that not a whole lot other than creationism makes sense.

In fact tossing it aside in a barrage of insults just makes science the new dogma and is a mentality poisonous to the process of discovering new things.

I mean in a two sentence post you can detect utter vehemence and nonstop condescension to people who believe differently than you. The fact that someone could get so angry they feel like physically injuring someone for merely disagreeing is eerily similar to the damned Dark Ages.

Re: Stupid Creationist!

Clearly this topic should just be moved to the flames and BS. People taking it to a personal level is one thing... but then people started being offended at something someone said on the internet!!! I would like to think a level of maturity was there, but people sit there and look down on others and speak to them in extremely negative tones and act like they were not asking for it. I say...

They were asking for the lulz

Moving on to more pressing matters. See figure one where I pointed out that most traditional religions rely on something called free will. A merely assumed feature to the world we live in. Kind of like when we assumed the world was flat. Or that the Earth was the center of the universe.

The big problem is that determinism explains more than anything else. It is the sole reason that we can use the past's examples to predict future events. If things happened at random, I would not be able to boil water at the temperature I did yesterday. Now you will say, "but no, that has nothing to do with choice behavior." And to that I say, "how can you prove this?" Did you know the number one predictor in suicidality was previous suicide attempts? The best predictor of someone committing a sexual offense is their criminal history to related offense, too. And the strongest predictor of someone who rebounds from a diet is number of past rebounds.

Why do humans think that their brains work above and beyond the laws of physics. Isn't that a bit cocky of us? I believe so. We have no evidence at all to support this idea of free will. Most people just say, "boy that'd be annoying to change society all on account on one silly idea."

So, anywho... My stance against religion is that is sure does not make much sense and often weighs in on ethical issues that it has no business meddling with. And it talks about sin. And as I had said before, sin is absolutely impossible. Yes, indeed, I have faith in that assertion. FAITH!!! OH DEAR!!! IM PART OF THE PROBLEM NOW!

And now please everyone take note of this very important quote

"You can try to say that religion never tried to impede science, but I would say your view of the subject is impeded by your ass, as your head is shoved far up it."

Re: Stupid Creationist!

No don't move it to F&BS because if you do then sooner or later it'll end up being bumped again by me or OhZone and this mess might start up all over again.

But it is true that people need to stop taking things so personal and debate without being emotional!
