I decided to start making some caps on dA, trying to go in a different direction than the normal "make caps, get caps deleted, etc." hullabaloo.

Apologies for that. I was looking for a palette that would suit the story all the while trying to remain readable. I felt it was, but since it is not working for others, I just quickly made an edit using a softer palette which, hopefully, is more readable than the previous version:
