One complaint why, why, oh why even in a drawn comic does the transformation take place below the laboatory bench. Budget to low for special effects?

The drawing style makes me think of a low-budget horror movie. Perhaps it's simply an homage to that style, where a change like that would occur below the bench to switch actors.
