You are right. Our depiction of modern sirens come from other different creatures from the Greek mythology, the undines and the nereids. The vase concretely shows one very popular story, when Odysseus (the roman Ulysses) wanted to listen to the songs of the sirens, so he had himself tied in the mast of the boat, instead of plugging his ears with wax, like the rest of the crew .

From the mashup I think her transformation is going to be faster, and less painful.

The cutting of corners is inevitable when the budget is small. There were already signs of that in season 1.

There has been speculations by fans that her transformation is faster, and less painful is because she gotten use to human form between season 1 & 2 so there's a chance that the other merpeople would suffer more in there transformation.
