Advice on Publishing Erotica

It crossed my mind to maybe try writing one of those fetish novels I see on Amazon. I've downloaded a few, and I'm pretty sure I could make something of similar quality. And it might be a good way to make some extra cash. Does anyone have any advice, though? What differentiates those books from, say, free stuff on Fictionmania? Is it harder than it seems? I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I'm guessing that no one makes any real money on this stuff. If you enjoy making it, then do so. But trying for money is probably going to spoil all the fun for you.

But if you are still interested in making money- it might be more work than you think. Please note: This is not from my personal experience. I have not self published on any of this sites, but strictly from my own research.

First think about what you want to write. Amazon has a huge list of forbidden subjects Offensive content...
We don’t sell certain content including content that we determine is hate speech, promotes the abuse or sexual exploitation of children, contains pornography, glorifies rape or pedophilia, advocates terrorism, or other material we deem inappropriate or offensive.

SmashWords allows for just about everything but that site has a much different rules, more on that later.

Back to Amazon
From what I've found out, if you want to make any type of money you need to churn out decent content consistently. 5,000-10,000 word short story with a solid kink scene. It needs to be well edited (gramarly.com) and the dialogue must be on fire.

I'd also recommend: https://www.youtube.com/@DaleLRoberts This guys has a bunch of tips for self publishing on Amazon. Including how to keep from getting your account terminated.

Hypothetically- lets say you can crank out a 5000 word short story, fully edited, cover, formatted in about 20-24 hours of solid work. You publish it, and after a month it reaches Amazon Book Sales Ranking of 500,000. That means you managed to sell 5 copies in one month. At 2.99 with the 70% royalties rate you net (2.10 *5) 10 dollars and 50 cents. You're making about 43 cents an hour.

If this seems like total bullshit you are correct, if you want to make some easy money, go scrounge the garbage cans for aluminum cans it has a much better return.

Now for SmashWords. I have talked to an erotic author that claims to be able to pay their bills by the money they make off of their 'Taboo Erotica'. I have no idea how massive their bills are and how much they make, but I believe them.

You want to make some extra money of selling erotica, it won't be easy. You need to figure out your audience, find something you like to write, and be consistent with your content. BE isn't as popular as it once was but Bimbofication seems to be the most lucrative genre.

I hope this word soup makes sense. I'd love to talk more about this subject if anyone cares.
