Wait, I thought we were discussing Whittaker, not Peter Davison.

I hear that. I'm watching the latest season for the first time on demand now, halfway through, and already these are some of my favorite episodes.

Don't get me wrong, I HATE some of the stuff that Moffat's done, but when he's good he can produce some real classics. In any case, I'm also glad Clara's out of the picture. She just really bugged me.... That freaking smirk.

I'm really excited for this development, just to know the Doctor's reaction and how s/he'll handle this change. We don't get a lot of female (or to an extent, transgender) leads in sci-fi so this is a positive step forward.

I just really, really hope that they don't try to make it "funny." In my experience, modern Doctor Who is at its worst when it aims for humor. The writers seem to tend towards slapstick, and it gets worse around regeneration time. Y'know, 'cause a great way to express the Doctor's mental strain is to have them lapse into zany crazy shtick. I half expect we'll get lots of "Oh look, I've got balloons on my chest! Bouncy bouncy! Let's go to the bathroom, it'll be weeeiirrd!"

I seem to recall them briefly lampshading that with Missy.
You can express someone's surprise at waking up differently gendered than when they went to sleep without being tasteless about it.

Children watch this show too. I doubt they'll be allowed to get away with anything that crass.

If they treat the Doctor's regeneration in a quirky and tasteful manner (she could make a perplexed comment about a helium leak somewhere in the TARDIS upon hearing her new voice), I'm all for it.

I seem to recall something a little more risqué with Missy, though not by much; something along the lines of "we go through changes like anyone else, some more profound than others" with a meaningful glance downwards.

I mean, I could totally be misremembering this, but would anything Missy does surprise anyone anymore?

Re: Doctor Who is now OFFICIALLY a woman

The Doctor thought he'd become a girl once when he regenerated with longer hair

1:35

So, I'm going to imagine it goes similar to that again, just a little different; "Oh! I am a girl this time. But still not bloody ginger!" And then she gets on with life, opening a closet in the T.A.R.D.I.S full of girl clothes she'd been waiting to try one day.

I wonder if there'll be an explanation provided as to why the Doctor hasn't become a woman in all of his previous regenerations.

I doubt it too, but I don't put anything past them since the Slitheen.
