Re: Lucky Mallet - Shrink Fan Comics

I do not understand why half-complete comics are published.

The littlest Sister had a complete story, but felt like that was it. That's fine, it was a good story.

Suzy and Frank comics for example told a single story that had a proper beginning, middle, and end. However they left room so that the story could continue after.

The more I drink was a complete story. Lucky Mallet is half a story, cut off on purpose so people will have to wait for months to get the second half only to find out that the second part is actually part one extended and at the end, the story isn't close to being resolved.

Do all comics need proper endings? No. Do comics need cliffhangers that could imply more after? It sure helps. Can you just make a cliff hanger in the middle of a story so people have to wait months to see the second part?

Lucky mallet is a very pretty comic and I like the art style but beyond that I feel that waiting a whole month, paying $15 made this comic feel cheep and underwhelming.

We do understand that some users dislike having multiple comics that don't end on a complete story. But it's also true that some stories simply don't work well when limited to a mere 15 pages - I'd have hated to have to condense all my ideas for Small Fortune into a single issue!

That's why we endeavor to have a good balance of multipart stories and one-shots; for instance, the two previous releases were single-issue complete stories, next month's comic is a one-shot, and Operation Half Off works as a series of vignettes that wrap up in one issue. You should also keep an eye out for The Invisible Girl 2, which will conclude that story.

Re: Lucky Mallet - Shrink Fan Comics

I can understand that. And maybe I'm just a fan of more one-shot stories because I don't have to wait 4-6 months for a conclusion. Sorry for the outburst! v.v

However I love the invisible girl universe and have story ideas, a bunch of one-shots and one continuous in that universe that follow a young woman named Kira, who is a size-enthusiast that works for Size-Tek and a cosplayer for the yearly Sizecon. If you would like to brainstorm with that idea let me know.

I'm always interested in submissions, and I get the feeling our fans might like to see more stories in the Invisible Girl universe. Feel free to send me a PM.

Soooooo I would've gladly traded another comic to be in place of this. If I could make one suggestion, would it be possible to shorten the wait between comics that have a longer storyline? I'm really really really looking forward to invisible girl two, especially since it'll be M/f.

Re: Lucky Mallet - Shrink Fan Comics

Given the monthly release schedule, there should be far more one shots and self-contained stories. Lucky Mallet sets up an entire universe, but all that setup has little payoff. If the scale was kept small, it could have worked as Mystery Mallet, with sequels exploring the mallet's origins. It's another example showcasing HMage's talent as an artist. I long for when HMage gets a proper good shrinking scenario that keeps the spotlight on their art and their strengths.

It's almost like scripts are written by people who regurgitate popular culture / anime stereotypes and haven't spent any considerable time in the real world. Like, aside from Japanophiles, who is interested or would understand Japanese shrine maidens and tropes? Was the first part in the shrine even necessary or relevant to the main action? I know a criticism that the action was rushed undermines the argument to keep things short and sweet until the site grows, but this story bit off more than circumstances would favor.

"But it's also true that some stories simply don't work well when limited to a mere 15 pages." Then maybe reject those stories and be a bit more selective on scripts. You should be having an easier time with those restrictions, not approving sprawling arcs hardly anyone is asking for! Are we going to fall back on defensiveness one month after the Drain debacle? Who decides "balance," and could I get the answers from someone else besides the guy tooting his own horn? Small Fortune is great but is also an exception. And what, it's 20% of the output for the last two years?

Aw, I was hoping the comic would be entirely about shenanigans in feudal japan. Otherwise known as Japanigans.

Still, I did like the art. A bit in agreement about yet another cliffhanger comic. I get that you need to keep us coming back but it's still a bitter pill to swallow.

See, that sounds a lot more interesting than "Modern girl gets uber powerful artifact that stops an Oni because the previous owner gave it up for "reasons"

"Escape Room" - a creep tricks a group of pretty girls into a puzzle room, who have to figure out how to escape while shrinking. Not that hard. J, I'll take payment via dead drop in the Arizona desert.

It's better with a single woman growing though, because the ending writes itself: she breaks out of the room via growth, as the creep forgot about the square cube law, and smushes the creep.

That's a fantastic idea!

On this topic, I don't mind waiting for the next part because I expect that the comics in between will be interesting too. For the most part, I've really enjoyed the diversity of comics--both in shrinking subject matter and in one-shot vs. series balance. There have only been a very small number of comics in the ShrinkFan catalog that I didn't care for. And that's another reason I don't mind waiting. I'd rather wait six or more months for a second and third part that I really like than endure two or three consecutive months of a series I don't like.

But if anyone wants more one-shot stories, then write one. To keep production going, there needs to be scripts, and if many of those scripts are part of a series, that's what's going to get produced. I've tried to balance that myself in my own submissions. Out of the three scripts I've submitted, two of them (A Small Sacrifice & The Littlest Sister) are one-shots, and the other (Laundry Day) was the first of a planned series. I'm writing others, including one that would span several installments. If they select it, great, and if they don't, they don't.

Overall, I'm just grateful that they exist, that they welcome submissions, and that they put out consistently solid content. I wish they had enough subscribers to warrant putting out two comics a month like GiantessFan, but we all know the SW community is smaller to the much larger GTS community. Pun inevitably intended.

All of this.

If I didn't work for the site, I'd still be cheerleading it for exactly that reason, and I'd still be just as disappointed that SFan can't currently offer two a month.
