Re: AnonIB sites - gone?

According to the blog posted earlier, the site apparently has a new owner, and they need to find new hosting, as their current host is ripping them off.

Here is an option to allow you to avoid the overage charges:
(1) Rackspace will upgrade bandwidth on acct# xxxxxx to 11,050 GB per month.
(2) The monthly fee for acct# xxxxxx will increase by $9,045.00 per month.
(3) There is a one time upgrade fee of $0.00 to complete this request.
We are working on transferring files to a different server and apologize for the downtime. Thank you for your patience!
Found this on AnonIB.com, same thing as in the blog post.

What?! That sounds like some sort of huge scam. If people have to pay the site to post pictures in here (espcially ridiculous as $20,000), then the artists, like Mamabliss (especially since that person makes you pay to look at the other content of the site), have a right to copyright infringement.

Re: AnonIB sites - gone?

The only thing odd about that message is the bandwidth overage cost may be a little higher than average. Given that AnonIB serves images by the absolute truckload, I'm not surprised at the eleven terabyte projection.

It's certainly not a scam. If the outfit had actually charged them the twenty grand without warning, or changed their fees automatically, that would have been pretty skeevy.

Actually, I'm fairly certain CI applies even without someone making money. Which is why pirates can still get prosecuted.

Pretty standard for a hosting company. You're paying to stay within a certain realm of usage both in processing time (if it's shared server), storage space, and bandwidth usage. It is your responsibility to know if you're going to be able to operate within those restrictions. They've gotta make money, too. Granted, some companies are willing to work with you on the first offense, so long as you're showing a willingness to make sure they don't have to do it again (upgrading package or getting off their servers).

It's actually just like water usage in a city. You pay by the gallon. Have a .5 gal/hr leak that gives you a $500 bill? Should've been watching for leaks and keeping your pipes maintained. Granted, they may be willing to charge you at 20% the normal rate, assuming you're taking steps to fix that leak RIGHT NOW...

Re: AnonIB sites - gone?

It's pretty much a given that a site with AnonIB's popularity and traffic is going to eat bandwidth like it's going out of style. I imagine that Process Productions' usage isn't as small as you might think. While I can sympathize with the whole "you got boned" aspect of this, it's really something that anyone seriously running a website should've taken into account.
