After 72 hours without sleep an individual is considered in a dangerous condition. A small minority of humans can survive and function normally while only sleeping several hours per week. This would seem to suggest that the long hours that humans must sleep per night are a vestigial behavioral pattern intended for an earlier stage in our evolution, but now no longer performing a vital function (although all agree that a minimal amount of sleep is required for physical healing and rest), however this is a much debated topic among neurologists and biologists.
