Lets play Dwarf fortress: sucession game

I feel that it is time for this forum to join in on the greatness that is Dwarf fortress
together we shall create an epic history of war and wonder that will be told across the internet!
Basic rules are:
1-your turn lasts for one in-game year, which you have a week to complete
2-no actions that would make the next turn unplayable (like flooding the world)
3-no cheating or use of hacks
4-at the end of your turn pass the save onto the next player in line and post a report of events that occured during your turn.

first order of buisness is to find some players and decide a turn order.
any volunteers?

For info on the game, check here:
http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page

to get the game (graphical version) go here:

Re: Lets play Dwarf fortress: sucession game

I don't think that trying to get people to play a succession game of dwarf fortress, when most of them probably have never even heard of the game is a good idea.

It has a very steep learning curve. Not to say that it isn't a good game. A general discussion thread would probably be more wise until people gain an interest.

This is the xkcd thread about dwarf fortress.
http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

And this is the succession thread spawned from that thread:

Boatmurdered is one of the more interesting succession threads.

i agree that it does have a high learning curve, but anyone can play, so things should be fine if they just check the wiki.

It is also my hope that we can make a succesion game even better than boatmurdered!

Heh, last time I saw this thread title it ended up with an insane lp of the game on the SA forums. Good times. I don't actually PLAY the game mind you, could never really get into it, but it does look interesting, at least it could be for some people.

Re: Lets play Dwarf fortress: sucession game

I would like dwarf fortress if the sheer leetness on it was turned down. Ditch the ASCII art. It was nessesery in the 80's, but not now. Some simple icons or at least mid-rez setting would make it easier to play, since you wouldnt have to look up what a # or a moving & was again.
My only other gripe is it has a "learning curve of slamming into a brick wall". Theres a million things to do, but no explination in-game about what to do, why, where, or how. How about a tutorial where you start SMALL. Like. "Build a storage room, enough beds for all your dwarves, and enough food for a year" with a few starter units, then expand on it from there, gradually giving you more advanced units, professions, etc.

the link i put in the first post links to the graphical versions download site, so theres your ASCII problem gone.
As for the learning curve, just use the wiki, it has guides and toutorials abound.

Re: Lets play Dwarf fortress: sucession game

I've already caged most of the cats in my fortress (damned pet imports, and that cunning bastard of one that saw that it was going into my beta sewing pit (that really never eventuated) and adopted its executioner), and am putting up with tantrumspam, because:
1) I kept most of my fort above ground
2) My usual town watch of hunters (so the socialdwarves can don the iron chain mail and make DWE smackdown with the gobbos) had been mostly killed in the last raid, and
3) my now former captain of the guard went all tantrummy from a busted left lung and his wife, the fish cleaner, spotting the gobbos and being impaled for it before my wrestlerspam could save her

EDIT: forgot now my tantrumming jaildwarves who I left in the main lobby with all the shiny stuff to get happy on, are going around killing my "professional" military dwarves because said dwarves have their rooms on the far side of the ropes :\. Where's the hammerer when you need one
