Another factor to the original series is that the art team changed a few times during the series, and each group drew her bigger than the last. It's not actual be, just inconsistances.

I never read the manga but I watched the entire 13 ep anime in one sitting...

It was 6 and a half hours that warped my mind! ...and the chair! XD

I went through the anime and I plan on looking at the OVAs (already seen ep 1.)
Its very compelling if you sit down and watch enough of it. The manga is the same way.
