If someone says it's an homage, they're admitting where it came from. As a result, it's pretty much okay. In fact, it's almost encouraged. Funny how that works, eh?
Pretty much the only difference between an homage and ripping someone off is if you fess up to it when you get caught. |

Close. With an homage, you usually present it as being inspired by and dedicated to a different work. Ripping off, you claim it as your own exclusive work. There's no "getting caught" when you do an homage right.
