Re: Monsters vs Aliens in the UK
Saw the german version 2 hours ago - great movie in my opinion. Good jokes and plenty of action for Ginormica (Gigantica in german
![]() I think the german dub wasn?t as good as some of the scenes I saw in the english dubbed trailer, but its still worth watching. Last edited by Darkhunter75; 04-03-2009 at 11:56 PM. |

Re: Monsters vs Aliens in the UK
If I'm not mistaken, Ginormica is actually her original name.
Giganta is the DC character that has nothing to do with Dreamworks ^^. Last edited by j2k; 04-03-2009 at 03:09 PM. |

Anyway, I don't know how you say "giantess" in German, but since in Italian is spelled "gigantessa" the name "Gigantica" immediately gives the idea of a giantess. |

You are right, in retrospect the name change, is a lack of respect. |

Re: Monsters vs Aliens in the UK
My error, of course its the other way around...
![]() Her german name is Gigantica (could also be written Gigantika in german). I think it references to german word "Gigant" (leviathan / stronger form of giant in english?). http://www.digitalvd.de/entertainmen...ka-150x210.jpg The term "giantess" is only used a single time, when the monsters talk about Susan?s size "problem" she refers to herself as "Riesin" (giantess). In my opinon the change from Ginormica to Gigantika was necessary for the german version. "Ginourmous" is an english word and as a german speaking watcher its very likley that you?ll not understand the meaning of "Ginormica". Altough, maybe the translators should?ve used the terms "enorm" -> "Enormika" instead.. This would be more near her original name but it sounds rather silly in german ![]() Last edited by Darkhunter75; 04-04-2009 at 12:31 AM. |

Re: Monsters vs Aliens in the UK
While I am usually strictly against translating names from English to German (or any other languages at that), I must concede that the "true meaning" of the name Ginormice would have been lost to the German audience since, as Darkhunter stated, "ginormous" has no direct counterpart in the German language (probably because it's a rather "modern" contraction of the words gigantic and enormous which hasn't [and most probably won't] happened in German) and so it had to be changed, or otherwise people in Germany would have found it very strange indeed.

Found a video of the growth scene. Not sure what language it's in, might be Russian. Shows the whole growth and a bit afterwards.
